Wish me luck! Pitbulls are now banned in Ontario, and I am so worried about Kate. I dont have alot to say, I'm too fusterated, but if anyone is in a state where they are banned can you please post and tell me how you are dealing with it.

On another note Kate and i start obediance classes at the end of the monthand are looking forward to it. We got a phone call today to tell us that we will be joined by a Rotti and a Doberman. Look out!

I dont know about different states but I can tell you that in England and Germany they are 'banned'(the laws in UK may have changed since I was last there)....they will not euthanize existing dogs unless they are used for fighting or have attacked anyone though. Basically the ban here means that you can no longer breed them, sell them or give them away unless its to a shelter or rescue, or bring them into the country(s). That said Ive seen a few young ones around, maybe 2-3 yrs old so Im thinking there is a clause in the rules somewhere and there is a Pit shelter not far from where I live, I do know that a lot of the rescue shelters bring dogs in from other countries like Spain, Portugal etc,
In Germany they have strict laws (varies from state to state) and all Pits, Am Staffs, Mastiffs etc are in the Dangerous Dog Category 1 (with Dobi's GSD'S etc in Cat.2) If you have one then it has to go through a few tests as defined by the state your in, where I am its a 'line law' and 'muzzle law', the line law is you have to prove to the state the dog is controlled on leash and the muzzle law is a personality test, if the dog passes it doesnt have to wear a muzzle when out in public, if you dont do the test and are caught with any cat. 1 or 2's without a muzzle its a heavy fine.
I didnt like the idea of it at first but now that Ive been here for a while Ive noticed that you dont get the back yard breeders that you do in many places and the Pits that Ive come in contact with are the way they are supposed to be, secure, confident and very friendly.

I am researching like mad tring to not get caught off guard. From what I understand Kate has to be muzzled and leashed in public, no exceptions. And that she can be taken from me at any point with any amount of force, I can face up to $10,000 in charges and/or up to 5 years in jail. I think she has to be registered also, I am going to call my vet tomorrow and ask them. They have been a huge help already with finding an obediance school, and basic research on the breeds. After Kate was kicked I was going to put her down because I was afraid that she wouldn't be "safe". I was afraid that because she had been kicked she would become agressive, but the vet reassured me and encouraged me. Now every time I go they have some form of information about Pits and Am Staffs or like some trivia fact for me. Its really cool that they go out of their way like that. They did it for my horse too when she reacted to the westnile shot, by attending classes about it.

Sorry I got really off topic there, I guess I just didnt realise how awsome my vet clinic is! Any ways hopefully they have some info for me. And hopefully everything goes well.

Their rules seem harsh, like I said the leash and muzzle laws are one thing but for them to able to take your dog away for no other reason than they can....I would think/hope theres a bit more to it than that.
I would definitely look into your specific area, maybe check around to see if there are any breed specific (for Pit) rescue centres in your state, in my experience most rescue centres are pretty clued up on the local laws.
Good luck, hope everything works out okay.

I know in towns in Colorado where they have banned them the very next day they would go collecting them and putting them down. VERY extreme cases over there so I wouldn't go by that... BUT I definately think you need to find out ASAP for both of your sake... I bet it will be a grandfather in type deal...and she'll be okay as long as she does not offend with any of her behavior...urgh... NOT FAIR!

This is what the vet, and the news have said so far. I don't have to register her, but she has to be muzzled and leashed in public. I face up to 10,000 in charges if she threatens any one enough for them to press charges, and it is only 6 months not 5 years in jail. I have 60 days from febuary 28 before the muzzle and leash law are enforced so we can do most of obediance school with out them. My biggest concern is that because I live in sutch a small community, if I offend a police officer they will take it out on my dog. I have already been taged as a pit owner because we had some break-in just down the road and the police came over to ask if we had seen anything. I had kate in the house but,I didnt get her in to my room in time. Honestly the first thing the cop said was "what kind of dog is that?" and i said shes a mutt. He goes " Pitbull mixed with what?" So Im a little worried, My friends have had vehicles tagged before, and it never turns out good.
