I just got a budgie last night, and i'm pretty sure its a boy(pink cere starting to go blue). I had the cage setup when i brought him home. My cage came with pretty much everything and i have a few questions. How can i help calm him down. he seems very freaked out and i've tried giving him fruits and when i put my hand in the cage he spazzes and flaps around the cage. I have bird gravel and only says fill a small cup, but my bird book says i need a substance so i filled the bottom with the gravel, do I do both? and one more question, the treats i have says to fill a cup of it, so do i have another feeder with the treats to?

Generally it's a good idea to give them a little time to adjust and calm down before you try to physically interact with him.

Chances are if the gravel is at the bottom of the bowl your budgie will never get to it. Some of my budgies will dig through the seed to find fresh ones and some will only eat what's on the top of the bowl. I would use a seperate bowl for gravel.

As far as treats go birds don't need treats every day. If I feed seed treats I'll put it in their regular bowl of a little while and then take it out and replace it with their normal diet. If I'm feeding them millet spray or furits/veg I have a seperate clip in the cage to hold it.

    Hi and congratulations.

Most birds adjust very quickly to there new surroundings others can take a couple of weeks i have added a link which has advice on feeding, training things like that.

With the grit you can mix this in with there seed diet or place in a seperate dish on its own.

Bird treats should really only be given a couple of times a week as they are very fattening and a fat bird that cant walk or fly properly is an unhappy bird.

Fresh fruit and vegtables can be given daily and if they will not touch it from a dish you can purchase a bird kebab skewer like thing and push pieces of fruit and veg on that and hang in the cage.

Chatting too you bird whenever your near him or when you walk past the cage helps him learn that you are not going to hurt him.
When changing food and water always chat too him this helps him adjust.
