Puppy no-no..going potty in crate! :(

My 6 month old chi puppy Chloe seems to think it's perfectly fine and normal just to let go and go potty in her crate whenever she feels like it! Poo, pee, she does it all. We even adjusted her crate to make it smaller so she only has enough room to lay down, to discourage her from thinking she could go potty at one end and sleep at the other, but she's made no improvement what so ever.

I can't understand what's wrong with her! It's like she doesn't get potty training, not a single bit, I'm starting to wonder if she's EVER going to get it! She's already 6 months old and she hasn't improved since day one.

I take her to her potty pads every hour or two, everytime she wakes up from her naps, everytime she's done playing, eating, or drinking, and she'll go on her pads, but it never fails that whenever she's back in her crate I'll hear her crying, which means she just went potty in her crate and wants someone to come clean it up!

It's really frustrating and everyone here is tired of cleaning up puppy poo all day! :x

We took her to the vet and theres nothing wrong with her, no UTI, she's not sick, she just doesn't seem to understand that going potty in her crate is a really gross habit!

She'll also go potty anywhere else she feels like it, beds, couches, carpet, living room floor, we can't trust her anywhere for a second. As soon as she starts to go, I'll pick her up and run her to her potty pads, but she still hasn't made the connection that it means she's not supposed to potty there.

I'm getting really hopeless and sadly everyone else in the house is really sick of her, because she cries ALL of the time, and howls all night, and now her potty training problems isn't making them like her much more either

I'm going to be starting college in July, so everyone is suggesting that it's not a good idea for me to keep her if she's STILL not going to be trained by then :? I don't want to believe them but if they are right, I can't have her crated all the time and howling and crying when I'm in an apartment. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Make sure she doesn't have any medical reasons for going potty. Should could have an infection that is causing some of it...

ONCE you've ruled an infection out...simply take the bedding out of her crate and when she does potty in there...don't clean it up for a bit... She'll learn that if she goes in there she'll have to live with it... Not forever for her to get USED to laying around in poo...just long enough for her to realize she'll suffer for the mistake... My male Pit when we moved to an apartment beleived the bottom of the stairs to be an acceptable place because it was almost as good as outside... Well...three times later I bagged up his pooo and crated him with the poo just inside his crate door... NEVER again did he potty at the bottom of the steps... They have to learn that it is going to cause them discomfort where they LIVE to get the point accrossed. YOu are encouraging her everytime you rush to clean the pooh out of her crate...give her attention and let her out all at the same time...

Let her mull it over for awhile...then when you go to clean it out...take her and put her outside without a word, snuggle nothing...as cold as you can make it... Then clean out her crate... Feed at feeding time and take her outside on a leash... Don't go inside till she potties...don't play with her or pay attention to her till she potties...once she does...give her as much praise as possible and the FIRST time she is crated for a good ammount of time without pottying...praise her...and take her outside...etc...

    Don't give up yet

My pekeapoo Dixie, pooped and peed in her crate for ever. She also went potty where ever she wanted when ever she wanted. I would be angry with her, put her outside, give her no attention. Everything that everyone told me to do and nothing worked. Finally one day, it just clicked and it has been like a month with no accidents. She will be one year old on April 11. I know it sucks and eveybody is tired of it, believe me, I annoyed my parents and my roomated for quite a while. I don't know what it was that changed everything, but it must have been something. Just keep doing whatever it is you are doing. Take everything out of the crate, moniter food and drink, take her out all the time, and never leave her unattended. One other thing I did was to leave her leash on her when she was in the house. She just carried it around with her and that way she could not sneak off behind a chair and go potty. She knew that she could not run away from me and that in a way she was still attached to me with it on. It helped us to work on other commands as well. Good Luck :y_the_best:

Thanks for replying guys, I really appreciate it. Unfortunately there's still no improvement or progress what so ever.

I've taken her to the vet and there's nothing wrong with her, no infections, she's a healthy puppy, but a very frustrating one!

I took all of the bedding out of her crate over a month ago because she was using it to pee all over it and push her stinky little poos under it.

Once I took all of the bedding out, she just kept on peeing and pooing in her crate! She doesn't even seem to mind, she'll even LAY in the pee!! It's REALLY disgusting, I was always told that a dog won't sleep where it goes potty, but apparently this whole theory completely skipped over Chloe because she doesn't seem to see the problem!

I've tried just leaving her poo in there for her to see that if she's going to make a mess in her crate she's not going to enjoy it, but just like I said up there, she just doesn't get it! It seems to have no effect on her, what so ever.

I take her to her potty pads after every nap, every playtime, every feeding, every time shes drinking water, every 1-2 hours inbetween, and nothing is working. I've had her on the same schedule ever since we got her 2 months ago
We bought her from a breeder so puppy mills wouldn't have anything to do with the housebreaking issues. I've done everything everyones recommended to no avail.

I'm really doubting that she is EVER going to get potty trained. I'm going off to college in July and moving into my apartment and I can't have a dog peeing and pooing all over the place

I really wanted her to be trained by then because when she is in her crate, she has an ear piercing shrieking cry that she will do for hours upon hours on end. It doesn't matter how many toys and treats and bones she has, she just cries, shrieks and barks constantly. So that's another issue I need to deal with that is completely baffling me and that I definetly won't be able to have in an apartment.

She has kept me up every single night since we've gotten her. She never sleeps it seems, she howls all night, I have to get up at midnight to take her out only to be waken up at 2:30-3am by her barking and shrieking again. I have to wake up at 6am so I'm only getting a few hours of sleep a night. I feel like a zombie, I'm tired and cranky all of the time so the problems get even more upsetting :(

Unfortunately if July comes and she's still like this, I'm going to be forced to give her up  I'm going to be working and going to school and living in an apartment and I'm just not going to have the time to deal with still trying to train her.

I just don't understand. My other dog got house breaking within the first 3 days, my other chi got housebreaking within the first month, but Chloe is *6* months old! I'm losing hope...

I feel your pain. I noticed it has been a while. Did you ever have any luck? I am going through the same thing with my 11 week GSD. She will go on command outside but when she is in her cage at night she will poop in it nd then have the nerve to poop again when i take her oustside. I hate to have to put her outside but if she doesnt get better i 'll have no choice. She is in pee school for the next two weeks. I hope it helps.

How old was she when you got her? Often dogs who are taken away from their mothers too young don't ever "learn" that they're not supposed to soil their nest.

You said you got her from a breeder. Can you call the breeder and ask for advice? Will the breeder take the dog back? Maybe you can work something out where the breeder will potty train the dog and give it back? Or maybe one of those board and train programs, only the goal is housetraining rather than obedience?

Is it possible that she doesn't want to go potty at the same place where other dogs go? I noticed this behavior in my first dog. After my second dog arrived and started potty training in the small yard, he tended to hold it till I took him out for a walk and went potty outside the house.

Not sure if you still have the puppy....but the problem may be the puppy pads. By using those, you are teaching her that going potty inside is OK. Eliminate the puppy pads and take her outside. Stay outside until she goes potty. Then praise her like crazy and give her a treat.
