What a good bedding for a guinea pig? I wanted to use Carefresh but it was too expensive becuase we have a large cage. We've been suing newspaper and kiln-dried pine but the pine gets everywhere when he runs around. ANy suggestions for a bedding that wouldnt fly everywhere so much? (the cage does have side, they are about 3 inches up before the wire starts.

I use Carefresh and have a pretty large cage. I only pay $12.65 for a huge bag though. I put newspaper down first and then Carefresh over that which seems to make it last longer cause you don't have to use as much. I don't know much about other beddings but hopefully one of the other members will.

well at the pet shop i work at sometimes in the holidays we have guinea pigs and just use wood shavings and hay, but it depends on the individual animal because some can allergic. i don't know much about other beddings because i've never had my own guineas, plus in england we don't (or we don't seem to anywayz) have as many sorts of beddings as some other countries do.

I use "sunseed sunthing special" northern white pine bedding. It has almost NO dust and isn't really expensive. I get mine at feeders supply. It makes the cage not as smelly as fast too. If they have "kaytee" pine bedding, DO NOT get it. I tried it, it had tons of dust. Also, NEVER EVER EVER get cedar bedding! :!: The aromas and oils can get your pig sick and possibly die. It's something in cedar wood that does that for some reason. (it's the red and white colored bedding if you see it) Hope this helps! :y_the_best:

    tried the kiln-dried pine again...

and it still gets everywhere, even if I use less with newspapers underneath it. i heard about some people using yesterday's news (a cat litter made from recycled paper). Is that safe? that may be better since it's heavier and cant fly around as much... and yes the kaytee stuff is super dusty! (i'd never use cedar for a guinea pig...way too many aromatic oils!)

there's really nothing you can do to keep the bedding in the cage. unless you make some sort of see-through material barrier. (too much work for me) I just take my dustbuster and vaccum all the shavings up about every other day. Guinea pigs are jumpy, so when they're jumping around the cage like crazy they kick out bedding.

I have seen some sort of wood pulp-based bedding. It's called Carefresh. It's super expensive. a bag that lasts about 1-2 cage cleanings (depending on the cage size) is about $5 (more or less). It definately stays in the cage though if that's what you're worried about. Here's a link:

Daisey- is the pine bedding kiln-dried? If not it could still contain aeromatic oils which can be toxic to small animals (just like cedar).

boricuaqueen327- Here are a few beddings you could try. Yesterday's News Small Animal Bedding, Kaytee Soft Sorbent Bedding, and KayKob.

    I use Carefresh myself.

I just noticed Carefresh has a new "ultra" bedding...it looks whitish. Any of you try this one yet?
Carefresh seems to be pretty good as far as not getting everywhere.

pine has a much lower chance of getting the animal sick than any other wood shavings. It's not kiln dried. any wood shavings can get an animal sick, that's why woodpulp or paper based is better (except kilndried). But I have to buy all of my animal stuff with my own money. (I'm 14 and get $15 every friday just for that purpose) I have to buy stuff for my dog (my mom buys the major stuff like food), toad, bird, guinea pig, hamster, and fish. I don't have enough money to buy carefresh or another expensive special bedding. :(

don't worry too much about the pine

Before I started buying kiln-dried pine, I used the regular stuff. My pets were fine. What I did was lay it out on a flat surface in the sun for a day or so and the smell kinda goes away. I read that on one of the guinea pig websites for people who couldnt find kiln-dried.

About Yesterday's News, I only found the cat litter. Is that the same?

Pine AND cedar shavings can both be harmful to small animals, because they are both softwoods which have aromatics in them.

Is a link to studies done on rats about the effects of pine and cedar. We use corncob bedding for our pigs, or you could try aspen as well. :)
