Anyone here have pet health insurance?

When we adopted Booger, the shelter highly recommended getting pet health insurance. I looked over the pamphlet and it looked like it ran about $15 USD/mo. My hubby laughed it off but I filed the pamphlet away just in case.

Does anyone here carry pet insurance and is it worth it? I would think so if you could afford it. I was just wondering after reading so many posts of people with pet health problems.

What do you all think about it?

Ive never had any pet insurance but at animal hospitals Ive come across it quite often. You have to read between the lines and make sure your getting the coverage you need, usually the basic, lower cost premium includes just things like annual general exams and vaccines, it'll cost more to have full coverage in case of accident or illness. Another thing was one of the hospitals I worked at would not accept any insurance, too many people 'appear' to have the coverage but havent kept up with monthly payments so the insurance is actually void, the hospital loses out on the payment. What we'd to do was fill out a form for the client stating illness/accident, diagnosis and costs which they would send into their insurance company and claim the money back...but the client had to pay us up front. I dont recall anyone having problems claiming the money back from any of the insurance companies. May be something you should check on though with your insurance company, make sure there is no clause in there that if you have already paid the amount it will be re-imbursed. They usually dont cover pre.existing conditions.

Yes, I have pet insurance -- thank goodness!

    Hi Cassie,

I adopted two cats, about a year old, in April of '04. I found the cuties through Petfinder.com, who at the time had an arrangement with Sheltercare.com to offer two free months of insurance (now it's just one free month). I signed up for it right away, and unfortunately needed to use it shortly thereafter for my little one's gum infection.

Anyway, when the free period came up, at $10 USD/month per cat, and the current cost of vet care, I went for it! It didn't take long for the premiums to pay for themselves. Especially in December, when my poor Sophie, an active brown tabby, fractured her hip and I opted for surgery to repair it. Total cost: $1500. Cost to me: $50 deductible. Insurance would have paid for up to $2000.

Feel free to e-mail me, or post, with any more questions... to me, it's a "no-brainer!" :y_the_best:

I've considered it, but right now, our vet is incredibly cheap. When Lizzy had the cancer in her toes, the surgery for amputation, after care, meds, etc only came to about $60. Trixie (my dog) had warts removed from her eyes, spent the night and got several meds, and that only came to around $60. When Romeo ate sawdust, got sick, and spent 2 days at the vet getting lots of antibiotics, it only cost $30.

All of the vaccinations we get at the Air Force vet at cost which is only about $10/cat.

If I ever move and can't find another reasonable vet, then I'll most likely look into the insurance.
