    Hello,

I just came from the vet once again. This has been the 4th time that I have taken him in the last two months. Ok, this is what I am doing. I have him on Nutro Max cat wet (once a day) and dry. He gets about a size of a quarter of raw hambuger (once a day, that was grown in our back yard, so that there are no additives) he also chews on grass that I grow for him and the other cat I have. Pud gets them but Squeaker does not get uti's. Right now I am getting really worried about this. I do not want his uti's get into his kiddneys. He is a wonderful kitty and I do not like it when they get sick in any way. IF you can help me figure something out so I can stop taking him to the vet.

    Thank you for your help,
    Epi

P.S. I have not changed their food in two years.

a holistic vet I used to take my dog to told me cats respond really well to cranberry supplements to aid off any UTIs. Keeps the bacteria that causes UTIs from sticking to the urinary walls.
Any idea at what age he was neutered?
There is a theory that males cats who get neutered really young (weeks old rather than the norm of 6 months old) have a tendency to have more UTIs as their urethea doesn't fully develop.
Have no clue on the accuracy of that but being a theory I would imagine it must happen.
I'd try to cranberry supplement. My dog is chronic with UTIs and I started her on cranberry (add to her food) the past spring and she hasn't had one since

Pud is little over three years old. We took him in when he was a little over 6 months old. I will try the cranberry sup.

    Thank you for your reply

it'll take a little while to work....but cats usually do well with it. You should probably look for a liquid form since cats are so picky. I mix a tablet with my dog's food and she scoffs it right up - well she's old so eating is her only delight LOL

He is on meds right now. I am going shopping tomorrow and pick some up. By chance what store might have it?

Was his urine analyzed and found negative for crystals?? If he has crystals, he may need a low ash prescription food.

you could probably get a liquid form at someplace like GNC

I live in a very small town. The vet I use is not like the big cities. The reason I go to him is that I only pay 20 for the vist and meds. The nearest vet that can do the test is over 50 miles a way. I do not think that Pud would like the long drive. How low should the ash be. I checked all his food and it goes from 3 to 2%. Should it be lower?

I hear ya about the small town vets. That's what I use and I appreciate his years of experience. But any vet can scope the urine for crystals. I'm not sure about the ash content...my vet put Sabrina on Science diet c/d and I just switched her to Natural Balance and she's doing fine (knock on wood). I compared the percent before I switched but I don't remember now.

Disregard what I posted about the food! I just came back from my vet's about Copper now. He has blood in his urine. I haven't been able to get a sample yet, but my vet says it's due to crystals only. I got prescription food (Science diet c/d) and he poo-pooed the Natural Balance food even though it has cranberry stuff in it. He mumbled something about "I guess it's not working, is it?" when I argued it was good food with low this and that lol. I swear everytime I post something like that something bad happens. And Cop has never has any urinary problems! The vet says as long as he's still peeing, we're OK--meaning no blockage. Copper peed in the corner of the kitchen today (I couldn't get the ssscat refil can to work) and there was blood in the puddle. I've NEVER been happy to see cat pee lol. Hmmmm...do you think there was a reason the new ssscat can didn't work? The amazing thing is his tolerence for pain. He is licking his bum area right now, but other than that doesn't seem to be hurting. I know us humans would be begging for pain medicine about now, huh?

even though Science Diet foods are scoffed at (and I agree) the prescription diets that are geared toward a specific health problem IMO are good.
My dog has lived on the Prescription CD food for 2 years now with no reoccuring stones and she had major blockage (6 pencil-eraser sized ones blocking her urethea and up to 30 in her bladder). She simply could not pee - want to talk about being terrified for a pet. I just knew what was going on...that poor dog would pace, squat, stand, pace, squat, stand and then the puking began it was horrible watching her.
Anyway....I have no idea what the can is you're talking about. But if you have trouble getting him to eat the CD food mix some warmed up tuna juice in it to entice him and gradually start to reduce the tuna juice.
Some cats don't like the CD food right away...
Good luck for him....and hope this clears up soon

He scarfed that c/d food right down! I figured he would be fussing about no canned fancy feast, but he wasn't. I'm going to leave both cats on it because Sabrina has a history of crystals too and I'm not taking any more chances. She has been on this food before but they said I could switch her to Purina Urinary formula but then her coat got really flaky, so I switched them to NB.

BTW--The ssscat can is the deterrent spray I got to stop him from peeing in the kitchen. It has a motion detector on it and blasts harmless air when activated. I couldn't get it to work this morning. So he peed in the corner, and I was happy.

Mary--did your dog have to have surgery to remove the stones? My vet said right now he is treating a male cat that has been on a catheter for 3 days and can just now pee on his own. That's when I said "I'll take a 10 pound bag of that food, please".

    Thanks for the advice!
