Ear Mites in dogs

I think my dog has ear mites. Last week I went to clean out her ears and there will small speeks of "stuff" in her ear. "Stuff" that I haven't ever seen in her ears before. Not covering the entire ear but enough for me to notice. I cleaned her ears and last night I noticed it was still there. She is shaking her head too, but not very much.
I think she has ear mites based upon what I have read, but it may be a infection or something else. So she has an appt with the vet tomorrow.
What kind of medicine does the vet give for ear mites? Is it a one time drop or drops you have to do every night for a few days?
I feel bad for her and I feel like a bad mama for not realizing this last week

when one of my fosters (cats) had ear mites I was given a vial of Ivermectin to inject into her ears....had to do that and clean out her ears with a wet cottonball and repeat 10 days later

My vet gave me Otomax or mitopic or something like that. it is drops you do twice a day for like a week. If I"m not mistaken, it is the same medicine for ear mites as it is for a yeast infection in the ears. That is what made me mad the last time I took my dog in for it, I told him she had a yeast infection in her ear b/c she got that alot, and he's like, well we'll have to check for ear mites so I said ok, then it was a yeast infection and he gave me the stuff that I had used for ear mites. I was like ?what did I pay you to do that for if it is the same meds??

Theres different types of ear mite medication, Otomax may kill the mites themselves although to my knowledge it isnt used for that and Ive never known a vet to script it out for mites, its used for yeast and bacterial infections, it wont kill the eggs, Tresaderm will take care of everything, mites, yeast and bacterial. Then there Acerax (sp) which is one time treatment, Revolution which gets rid of mites and a lot of other nasty critters. Every vet has their preferences of what the like to use and what wil suit the pet.

    Ear mites natural remedy

Have you considered a natural cure for the ear mites. Thornit powder is very effective. Ear mites produce a brown smelly wax in the ear. They can also transfer to the paws of the animal. This can then cause re-infection, so they should be treated to. The powder is used around the ear and on the feet, it kills the mites. It is much kinder to the animal as there are no chemicals involved.Search on yahoo for it. Its about £7 uk pounds and lasts ages. Hope that this info is useful for you, i swear by it, i use it regularly to keep the dog and cats ears clean. Best of luck Izzie :) :)
