I have a very strange situation but im hopin sum1 here can help.

Basically about four weeks ago one of my cats had four kittens. However, between Sunday and Monday all four sadly died.

My cat that had these kittens seemed to think they were lost. On Monday night, last night and then again tonight she has been looking around and miaowing in a very desperate tone, not like her usual miaow. She also looks at me and miaows, as if she is asking where the kittens are.

What's strange is that she does not do this during the day, it happens late evening and into night, sort of around 9.30pm time. She does it every now and then right from that time until the time I go to bed.

I basically want to ask three things:

    1) Does anyone know why she's doing this? Is it unusual?

    2) Will this continue on for a long period of time?

    3) Is there anything I can do to help her or comfort her, other than trying to talk to her?

Thank you so much for all your help

there isn't really that much you can do differently than what you are doing now except just wait for her to forget about the kittens. we had a guinea pig that both babies were dead at birth and what was strange was that usually they want other babies to nerse off of them but she refused so after a while of being in a cage alone and being spoiled with treats she forgot about her trauma and just went back to living life like she used to.
so what you can do is just act like she never had babies when she tries to look for them you might be able to distract her, and help her forget quicker.

Thanks - sounds like a good idea. I just hate seeing my cat worried. Hopefully that'll work and she'll soon forget.

you should get the momma cat spayed too - kittens may have died from a genetic issue that could keep happening.

They died from cat flu which they contracted from their mother - you're absolutely right. We're hoping to get her spayed within the next week.

upper respirator infection? Nasty for kittens...nearly lost a couple of foster kittens a few years ago to it. Scary stuff.
Glad you're getting her spayed. Best for her...and you won't have to worry about losing anymore kittens. I remember my panic when one of the 2 week old fosters nearly died in my hands....horrible feeling. You feel so helpless.
I couldn't stand to let any of my cats have kittens - can't imagine how terrible I'd be about rehoming them. Next thing you'd know I'd be one of those little old ladies you see on the news with 100s of cats in a house.
I do want to be a mean little old lady when I grow up - living with curlers in my hair, slippers on my feet, wearing a housedress...that's my dream
would love to see pictures of your cat

Thanks it was quite a hard time unfortunately. What was shocking was that they all were fine only a couple of days before the kittens died, all alert, all happy, moving around.

It's terrible watching my cat worried, I wish I could help her.

The cat who had the kittens is called Rosie - she's our baby. We have two other cats, one 2 and a half year old tabby, and her one and a half year old son.

BTW: Is there any way of uploading an image here without it costing? (I'm new to auspet!).

    Thanks

Or use Chessmind's link. All the sites are free hosts:

    http://www.auspet.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10941

Or use Walmart.com's Photo Center. Just upload your photos, click that pic to enlarge, right click on the mouse to copy image url, come back, click the IMG tab, paste, click the IMG tab again. This works the same as Snapfish. Snapfish will store your info for many months, maybe up to a year. Walmart photo center is more limited, maybe a few weeks or months.

    Hi

Just want to say thanks to everyone who's posted replies.

Thank the good Lord, it seems that my cat has stopped miaowing worryingly now - she's much better, and still her happy, alert but somewhat insane ( :D ) self.

Nah - im happy to have her so happy. ive also had her neutered now, as well as the male cat who was the father.

    Thanks again!

you just made a decision to become a part of the solution rather than part of the problem by spaying your cat and having the male neutered.
I, and all the unwanted cats dying in shelters, thank you
