Cat has Redness near stitches

    Hi

Recently my cat, as explained in a post a few days ago, lost her kittens.

On Monday, we thankfully had her neutered. However, I have just today noticed redness below her stitches.

Should be taking her to the vets tomorrow - but I was wondering if anyone could shed any light on this sort of thing? Or if anyone has had previous experience with it?

If anyone knows what may cause it, and if it is serious or not, please reply soon.

    Thanks

HI, sorry to hear about your kittens.....
Its not that uncommon to see some redness around the stitiches (area), it depends on how bad it is though, if its just a minor redness it could just be a little irritation from the stitiches, on the other hand, if there is any swelling (again, a 'little' swelling is not uncommon, more of a slight raised area along the suture line, maybe a little hard but not solid....like 'rock solid'), also any discharge of any kind, blood, serum....like a watery fluid or if the area is very hot then you should take your kitty in to be looked at by a vet, the fact that your concerned about this I would take her in anyway, its always best to have a vet take a quick look to make sure all is okay.
Sometimes the pet themselves can cause some redness and swelling if the are either licking the area or rubbing themselves on something (carpet, furniture) or if there is another pet in the house that is licking the area. If this was done on Monday its been 4/5 days, Ive always advised people to watch closely especially after the third day as that seems to be when the area will start to itch....which could cause more licking or rubbing....not sure if that helps at all.... :?

Thanks very much - thats certainly put my mind at rest a bit.

I will still get her checked at the vets though, as you say its best.

Hope to be getting her and my other cats immunised against cat flu in a few weeks, as it was cat flu which caused the kitten death.

I would get it done sooner...but vet bills are hugely expensive, as you probably know!

Anyway thanks again! Aren't cats great?

Yes, cats are great....they are a constant fascination to me, Ive mostly had dogs....but had a few kittys too....dogs I understand but cats seem to have the ability to run rings around me....just when I think Ive got them figured out they somehow manage to prove me wrong....again and again.....
    amazing creatures. :D

Teehee  yes theyre amazing indeed. I like dogs too, but i only like them when they're soppy and quiet, not as devoted to them as i am to cats! (Although we had one stay with us for a few days whilst his owners were on holiday - i liked him!)

Cats make me laugh a lot, they do the funniest things. They're especially funny as kittens when they spend a few minutes running around and jumping on things etc.. lyk they're mad. :D

I worked out that at some point, there have been twelve cats in my house, including kittens! My first cat had kittens last year and fortunately they were all OK and everything worked out fine - one of the litter we still have, his name is garfield and he's huge - twice the size of his mum!

Have you had cats have kittens or any similar experience?

the only kittens I've had around are ones I've fostered. They are fun but I'm sure glad my cats have never had any. I can't imagine how bad I'd be about giving them up. No one would ever be quite good enough (in my mind).
The last litter of kittens I fostered (a year ago) were five 4-week old Siamese kittens. The shelter they came from had put their mother down cause she got aggressive. It was so sad to watch those poor babies. But my sealpoitn Siamese took a liking to them and would spend hours just sitting and watching them. The littlest one in the litter (I named Rita) would curl up beside Missy. Was so cute. I have a picture somewhere

    Hi all

Thanks for all the replies, etc.

It turns out that my cat has a form of dermatitis/eczema, which she had before, and that that is what has caused the redness. (Thanks to my vet!)

Thanks again - once she has had her stitches out she will be treated with an injection and some tablets.
