Italian Mastiff--basic Mastiff education

The Italian Mastiff is generally known as the Cane Corso...it's just another term for the breed... A generic term for the breed... There are Mastiff type dogs that originate all over the world for different utilitarian uses, wkth different phenotypes--looks--based on what kind of environment they live it... Bullmastiff's and English Mastiff's are the oldest and have become an American type Mastiff... They're purpose has basically been lost...BUT the MAIN purpose of ANY mastiff breed is to be a guardian for the most part... Cane Corso's are used as farm type dogs and are more drovers than guardians for the most part... If you get a Cane Corso young enough they can accept other dogs...but in any case you wouldn't want to leave one alone with smaller dogs because at that point it wouldn't matter if the altercation was serious or not the likelihood that a small dog would be injured by a much larger dog like this is HIGH no matter what breeds you are talking about.

Neopolitan Mastiffs are also Italian in origination but generally are referred to as Neo's or Neopolitan Mastiff's... NOT Italian mastiffs...

Boerboels are the South African Version of the original Mastiff and ACTUALLY it's been discussed that PERHAPS the breed is the un-altered or closest relative based on type and temperment etc...to the ancient mastiffs you read about in the literature...the Estate Guardian type dogs of the middle ages... ALL short haired mastiffs do generally look alike and similar to English or Bullmastiffs.

I read a bit below about the Italian Mastiff so I had to share...

The Great Pyr, St. Bernard, Newfoundland, most ALL large breed guardian/livestock dogs are descendants or versions of the original mastiff from ancient times.

    Anyway that's that...hope you enjoyed...???

I have heard people refer to a Neo also as an Italian Mastiff. Thanks for setting me straight.

    Thanks for the info.

My sisters were recently in the states and got to play with an English Mastiff (9 months old and 120 lbs.) and I think they've fallen for the big guys!

thanks Sara that was great. I've gottne in so many arguments down here since the girls got here.... They've been called everything under the sun just like you said. One couple thought they were pits, another called them bull dogs, and Kabuki has been called a great dane twice.. Precious was also called a short haired Saint Bernard?? where they got thtat I don't know... but funny for sure.

Granvel seems to be the popular guy right now. He likes restling with Precious and taking her places. So all his buddies ask him all the time about her....LOL.. and he's not the conversation type by far....so he makes stuff up as he goes along. One guy asked how big she'll get, he told him " prolly around 150lbs" and he told them that they fight lions, cuz her read that in the info pack.. silly silly man... he needs alot more education!!!

My biggest pet peve is the whole "a mastiff is a mastiff"... NO not so...a Mastiff is much more than that eh? South African Boerboel is what I start with and then head the mastiff direction and feild the question...

Dutch farm dogs they brought over to Africa when they settled... Techincally it's an Afrikaan dog... Dutch african's= Afrikaaners.... You should read up on some of the lifestyle over there... They might as well fight lions... Ferrel cattle and the human garilla's you know...almost just as bad I think... Hmmmm....

I'd have to say my favorite of them all is the Boerboel for sure... one of the FEW very capable in what they were supposed to do...pure and hopefully we can keep them that way right Sam?

ANd BTW... Askari to date has killed...I'd say about 11 lions in the back yard...--does THINKING she did count???

askari is very nice looking Our 9 month old japanese/english mastiff bodi is great. the tosa-inu is the native japanese wolf called the nihon inu bread with, 1800's english mastiff/bullmastiff, 1800 english bulldog/ bull terrier, english/german pointer, blood hounds ,saintbernards, and last in 1924 they breed the great dane. Bodi's father simon is an brindle old english and his mother is tosa inu with neopalition mixed in maybe a 1/4. we just tell people he is all mastiff!!! how old is askari

    Good info,
most people have no idea what i'm talking bout when i tell them my dog's half neopoliatn. for some reason they all think its exactly like a bull mastiff. After attemting to describe what one looks like, they are left thinking its some sort of big Shar Pei

I love the central asian's and boerboels
I'm looking into one or the other of for my next dog.
How well do boerboels do in cooler climates? just wondering as they are south african in origin.

Okay been gone for awhile but couldn't help but answer the questions...not on much so anyway....

Askari is 2, well just over two and produced a lovely litter this summer...we kept one...

Boerboels do okay in the cold but they don't have much fur...although they do stay outside...I generally keep two in a pen in the cold so they can snuggle and if it gets to sub zero or single digits they come in for the night... Females have more fat so they'd do better than males...

Sidenote... CAS are VERY serious dogs so if you are leary about getting an aggressive dog I'd go with the Boerboel...FYI

    I agree.
Oh Sara, I think precious has killed a few down here as well, and the Baboons.. Oh lordy. she's killing them in great numbers!!! IN HER SLEEP maybe!!! LOL...

Anyhow. Precious likes the coolness. She prefers laying infront of her cooler and A/C... Buki on the other hand would prefer to be out side maurading around....

Thats a great name Askari. I told my self long ago I was going to name my next dog that. Where did you come across it, and whats the meaning for you?

My understanding is that Askari was the name of one of
    The Prophet Muhammad's descendants.

Also Askari-X is an islamic recording artist (who was the chosen name sake) for my next dog.

I think i'll keep brainstorming some alternatives, don't want to steal your name

I was also thinking of King, but apparently it's bad luck to name your dog a high n mighty name like king. I think who ever told me that is a little nutty my self.

Oh befor i forget. are Boerboels Akc,ukc registered? or is it only recognised in the south african club?

Oh n/m i just saw the caption listed under Boerboels picture.

    not akc ukc ><

does that mean you would have to go back to south africa to have your dog judged? would be a really neat trip, but thats a long ways away :m34:

No. You can get them judged here through ARBA and a few other registries. They do have people qualified to judge and rate them. its quite pricy to do though.

You can go to ARBA and some other rare breed sites to see the info in the united states. If you go to mine or sara's web page you'll find links to many of the sites.
