14 mth old border collie/pit mix vomiting phlegm

I've read vomiting is not unusual for dogs but our 14 mth old dog has been bringing up phlegm for the past few nights. He is NOT coughing at all. This happens between 2-7 am. It also has been several different times throughout some nights. He eats his last meal of the day between 6-7pm. He is not vomiting any food bits and he eats his morning meal just fine afterwards. The phlegm he brings up ranges in color from clear to reddish orange(suspect this color has some food residue) to light brown. Is this part of the normal vomiting for dogs? :?

 

It sounds like it could be reflux, which can be solved by giving a small treat before the dog goes to bed. My dog Snickers suffers from this, and it sounds like what your describing. I usually give about 3/4 of her dinner between 6 and 7, like you, but then I give her the last bit around 10pm.
