My husband and I are buying our first dog this Christmas. We both have grown up with dogs in our families. However I have high allergies to some dogs (like retrievers, german shepards) so in my family we have had small dogs like terriers and lasa apsa, and I hadn't had to many allergy problems with those particular dogs. My husband has always had big dogs (like rot weiller-big time allergies).

Can someone tell me what my dog options (other than what is listed above) would be for someone in my case or a site that could help me? Usually my eyes get itchy, I get hives, asthma and skin gets itchy. Now I know realistically I shouldn't even have pets but I can't do with out a dog. I just love them to much not to have one! Please Help! :)

I find my allergies will decrease or even go away if I just suffer through it for a while. My dogs don't bother me much now, even when the house is covered with fur. Since I don't get as much time with my cats now, they are bothering me a bit especially when one sleeps right next to my face. But this didn't used to bother me when I held him like that all the time! Our mice really bothered me right after we had the litter of babies, since the population increased so rapidly. That took a whole month to go away. Now they only bother me when I am cleaning the cages.

I had the same problem cuz my mom has allergies. One dog is the Wheaton Terrier. They are a big dog, are nonallergenic and are really cute!! Maybe you could look into them. Also I think a portugeuse water dog.

What about one of those standard poodles? They get pretty big and from what I know (may not be true) poodles are good for allergy sufferers.

Also, what about a greyhound? I have no idea how they do with allergies but they sure don't have much hair. I just went to a festival thing last weekend and there was a greyhound rescue group there with like 20 greyhounds. They all looked really nice and calm. And they are big - tall. ? Just an idea.

or there is always that lovely mixed dog the labradoodle! half lab half poodle. (I wouldn't seriously recommend one of those though, because I do not think it is right to purposefully breed random dogs) I have heard of something you put on your pets when people with allergies come by so as not to send the person into alergy attack I forget what it is though.

I would say a standard poodle as well if your husband pregers large dogs. They are actually pretty large. Also you might want to check out other poodle mixes. You dont necessarily have to get one from a breeder check out www.petfinder.com and you can find all kinds of poodle mixes. A friend of mine just got a cockapoo (cocker spaniel/poodle) from the pound. Poodles are said to be hypo-alergenic (sry for spelling) and are popular among people with allergies.

but I don't think the pound is a good idea for someone with dog allergies! :p as far as i know maltese and poodles are great for allergy sufferers, but other than a standard poodle i can't think of any other big dog that wouldn't send your allergies in a frenzy.

[edit] okay because I know poodles and other white foofy dogs aren't for everyone, I did a quick google search. here's a whole list of breeds I found you might want to check out too, and if you click their name it tells you all about them. hey, you could even get an american hairless terrier, no allergies if there's no hair!

Hi i dont know if this will help but my grandad suffers from allergies to dogs yet he is perfectly fine with his Long Haired German Shepherd what he does is when grooming the dog he sprinkles some baby powder onto the dogs coat and this reduces dust particles from the dogs fur which causes the allergies.
Baby talc powder is harmless to the dog and also stops the fur from matting.

Just a suggestion maybe it will work.
If not there is the use allergy pills or meds this eventually stops your body from having allergic reactions to certain animals.
Thats what i did even though i owned horses years ago i would sneeze like mad i even used to come out in a rash when i was near them but i refused to part with them and it was my doctor who told me about using anti allergen medication and it worked wonders on me but again this may work for some but not others.

    Mike.
