This was a local news story that I thought was kinda sad but also kinda interesting.

Our Sheriff had deputies come and check on his house everyday while he was out of town. Well, he had a German Shepherd that he kept in his yard. One deputy came to check on the house, went in the fence (unlocked). The German Shepherd came and barked at him and the deputy shot the dog dead. Of course, the Sheriff was mad and had the deputy fired. I say amen. The deputy says that he was protecting himself and what if it were a child, etc. etc. People here are divided on the issue. From what I understand, the dog didn't attack, just barked at the guy who was of course, in his fence. I think the deputy was trigger happy. Others do the whole "the fence was unlocked, the dog was dangerous" thing. The papers said that the deputy had had a prior incident, I don't remember the exact circumstances, but something similar I think.

I think it is interesting that the sheriff fired the guy. It is sort of setting like a precedent that if you go into a persons yard, and they have a dog, you can't just shoot the dog if they bark. I'm not saying it right. Just sort of seems like dogs rights are moving forward. lol.

    Just thought I'd share.

interesting story, I mean was all of the deputy doing was checking on the house and and had someone esle watching after the dog? I would think the deputy would know that the sherrrif also had a dog so just a heads up. My dogs do the same thing if somne comes in the backyard while they are in it. they start barking like crazy. I wonder what tcause though the sherrif used to fire the deputy.

Eliza, whatever happened to your job search?

You'd think the sheriff would have introduced the deputies to the dog in his yard and also explained that if they enter the yard, the dog will bark but will not harm them. Or tell them to NOT walk into the yard. Most dogs WILL bark when you enter their yard, for pete's sake.

That deputy is an idiot. Especially with a prior incident, he must be trigger-happy. I think as the sheriff, I would also take him to court and sue him. I am not usually a person who sues, but I would for that. I mean, when you ask someone to watch your house, you don't expect them to kill your pets, you know?
