A neighborhood Casanova, a stray, or both?

I live in an apartment complex, and for the past 5 days, a young male cat has been coming to our door and meowing incessantly. It sounds like he's calling someone, maybe he's looking for a mate. He quite obviously has not been neutered. Luna is spayed, but could he still be picking up her scent? He comes to the screen door and calls loudly for up to 15 minutes at a time, including very early in the morning. Luna just hisses and walks away from him and ignores him.

He has been hanging around outside our door a lot, and being that it's almost 100 degrees here today, I put out a dish of water and he drank non-stop for about 3 minutes. He's very young and thin, and it looks like he may have recently had a problem with hair falling out all over his back section, because the hair is so short now that you can see the skin underneath. Or else his back half was shaved and now it's begun to grow back. He's very friendly and non afraid of humans, as he came up to me and we had a little purr session.

Now I'm wondering if he's a stray in need of food or maybe just someone's un-neutered cat that they let roam around. Either way, not good. When I see the upstairs neighbors next, I'm going to ask if it's their cat. Any thoughts on any of this?

I would ask around - if no one claims him get him off the streets and to a shelter. His life might be short in a shelter, maybe not - but still better than being out in the heat

I don't know what to suggest...only also to check around to see if he belongs to anybody. If you've petted him and gave him water he probably likes you now and wants to come and visit.

Maybe he likes Luna, too. I don't know. I don't know if a male cat would still be interested in a female once she is spayed. Boy I'm a lot of help, aren't I. Sorry.

I hope everything works out. Let us know. :)

Thanks, both of you. I asked around and the little guy belongs to the people that live above us, they just got him and plan to get him neutered soon. I don't know why they're letting him roam around in the meantime, though.
