Jake will need a tooth pulled and I am wondering if bacteria from raw poses a problem getting in hte wound and causiing from his raw diet? my regular vet will pull the tooth, I will ask the holistic vet where I get his food from, but wanted to here other opnions

Darby had 16 teeth pulled a couple months ago and eating raw posed no issues for him after. I asked the same question to the vet then and although he said it shouldn't be a problem...I did get the lecture on raw feeding and how it is a fad. He suggested that Darby's bad teeth were due to the raw feeding...because darby was getting Natures Variety. This was a new vet to us..so I had to explain that Darby has had bad teeth since he was a puppy. I had not been giving him things to chew on because his teeth were bad..not the other way around. After he had his teeth/pulled and cleaned I was concerned he wouldn't be able to chew on things...but I was wrong. Within two days Darby was stealing bones from the big dogs and chewing like a mad man on them. He gets so excited about chewing on anything now. With 16 teeth being taken I didn't think he would have anything left...I was amazed to discover how many teeth dogs have. He is only missing the ones between the canines top and bottom and a few misc. here and there. He does fine. Of course his teeth are horrible and always have been, I swear it's a little dog thing. He needs them cleaned frequently. I started using a product called KISS in his water..so we will see if that helps.

Annie is also going to have to have one tooth removed, she just broke it and I am not sure how, but the pulp is showing. It doesn't seem to bother her at all, but I don't want to wait until it is.

thanks, Maisey, Jake has what Annie has, he has had it now for about 4 years, never has bothered him, at his last check-up the vet couldnt believe its not bothering him and suggested pulling it, that in the future its going to cause problems. I dont know I think why pull it if it doesnt seem to bother him, but the vet thinks otherwise

He is also skepticle about raw, but my last visit when I told him how well Jake is doing, he mentioned he has several other patients eating it, and he was going to look further into it.

we had a poodle growing up that hadthe most horrible teeth, was always getting them pulled, yuk

Before we started on raw, I put OxyFresh in Nala's water and gave her Greenies or Dentabones a couple times a week to help clean her teeth. I was also starting to brush them, but then we started feeding raw so it is no longer necessary to do any of that. The bones they eat clean their teeth (and I mean eat - they totally consume them).

I wouldn't worry about the raw food and bacteria. Obviously eating kibble causes bacteria to grow in the mouth or their teeth wouldn't get so bad. I really don't think there is much bacteria in raw food anyway. It's a possibility so we wash our hands "just in case" but it's not like all raw meat is teeming with germs!

At my son's boy scout picnic every year, they do a raw egg toss. They all were freaked out that I let my dogs lap up some of the raw egg. And then they all went to the park shelter to eat cookies! Naturally they did not wash their hands and they had all been handling raw eggs (intact and broken) and apparently no one but me thought there was anything wrong with that. I have also seen them cooking hamburger patties at campouts and the dads and kids both handle the little paper thingies that separate the patties and never wash their hands. No one has ever got food poisoning (yet). And how many of you have eaten cookie dough before baking it, when it contains raw eggs?

No, I really don't think we would get sick that often from raw meat. But washing hands is easy and will prevent that "one time" that I would rather not experience.
