ADVICE! Cat and Loud construction noises what to do for her?

    HELP!

I need advice on what to do for my cat during the construction noises that will be taking place on my apartment for 3 WEEKS, 12 hours a day. She wont be able to go out on our patio where she is used to being most of the day during the summer. We also won't be able to install our A/C during this time, she get's so hot, and me too. :(

Should we go to my friends back yard to get away from the loud noises? The problem with that is there is a dog in his back yard and she is phobic of dogs. Plus she freaks out driving in the car and his place is unfamiliar to her, she has never been there.

Or, should we stay home (her territory) and hope she can endure it.

Should I give her cat tranqualizers during the day? Would that help her or hurt her?

What would be best for my senior skiddish cat, I don't want her to have a Cat Nervous Breakdown, or run away.

Boarding her somewhere isn't an option because she hates and fears other cats and it would also be unfamiliar to her and cause just as much stress.

Has anyone had this problem before, what did you do to shelter your cat from loud constant noises for long periods of time?

Please Any Advice would be greatly appreciated

Hi and welcome to Auspet. :D We also had major noisy construction on our street. It lasted over 6 months! It was tough. We have two cats and at the time one baby girl (we now also have a baby boy :) ) Anyway, at first the cats were a bit annoyed with all of the noise, but like all of us they just learn to tolerate it. Keep your cat at home. She will adjust. You don't need to give her meds or anything. It is important that she stays cool. Perhaps get some fans or a portable mini air cooler. You can also fill the tub or sinks with cold water. It actually helps keep the air temp a bit cooler. Good luck through it all. It's only three weeks. I know it sounds like a long time, but once it's over you will be a happy camper.

:m23: and welcome! I agree with Chessmind. The comfort of her own home is the best. You can freeze some water in bowls or large containers and place them in sinks and tubs. My cats like to hang out in the bathrooms when it gets really hot and muggy in the house. A couple of them love the fans and will sit in front of it. If your cat is overly anxious or stressed, you an get Bach's remedy or Feliway diffusers from pet stores. She will adjust with time.

    Thank You for your advice!

Thank you Chessmind and Vene for your advice :D

I will do that, I will keep her at home and fill the sink with ice water and keep the fan on. I won't put her on any stress medication, unless she really goes bonkers. I pray she adapts ok.

Your experience really helped me to not worry so much about it, it was greatly appreciated.

I'll post about how she does after the construction is all complete.

    Thanks again :D

if she gets really stressed try Bach's Rescue Remedy. You can get it at GNC. It's liquid and you can add drops to her drinking water

    Thanks Mary,

I've never heard of Bach's Rescue Remedy, sounds like it would be the perfect thing to give her during the stressful time.

I looked up Bach's Rescue Remedy ingredients and it lists 27% alcohol, is it safe for my cat to have alcohol?

If so, does it have directions to how much to give her by weight, she is 14 lbs.

I see that it is available through amazon, very inexpensively.

Thanks so much for the info :D

I've given cats Bach's before w/no problem. My Dixie weighs 11 lbs. now (was 14 when she came here = former foster) I put about 1/4 stopper full in her mouth. She was going through a Little Miss Pee Pee Pants phase when I would get a new foster in. It didn't help LOL
I did figure out why she was peeing in all the wrong places though.
    Oh new post!!!!
But about 1/4 of a stopper couple times a day. It won't work on all cats but it's definitely worth a try over sedatives/

    Thanks Mary,

I will definately get some and give it a try if necessary. Your right...it sure does beat medications with bad side effects.

    Hi Vene,

The construction won't be starting for a couple of weeks, so, she is doing great :D and I pray she stays that way.

If she doesn't do well during the construction, does anybody know how many drops of the Bach's remedy I should give her, I can't find that info anywhere.

    Many Thanks,

    Goldy Cat

    Hi Vene,

Thank you so much for that wealth of information. My beloved Mimi and I are very appreciative. :y_the_best:

Yes, hopefully she will be a trooper and won't need it. :D

A couple of other things you might find helpfull. Leave a radio on, playing soft music. No hard rock, something like a classical station or that middle of the road muzak.

And you could try Comfort Zone with Feliway. It's a plug in, like the plug in air fresheners. You can't smell it, but your cat can. It's a pheremone that is calming and a lot of people have had success with it.

I would suggest for you to keep your cat at your house where it knows where it is.

Hope everything goes alright with her

And welcome to the board :D :D

Thank you all for being so helpful. I will look into "confort zone", and playing soothing music for her.

Yes, I have decided to keep her home, in her territory and familiar to her.

    Many Smiles,

I would just keep her in a bedroom or something as far away from the ruckis (sp?) with the tv or music on. Everyone gave great advice though. Good luck and let us know what happens
