I post this in the Pit Bull section as well!
Help me and many others end the myths and lies that are being told on Animal Planet by the Miami Animal controll!
    They say that:
    Pit Bulls have locking jaws!!
When they are out running the streets it is because they are hungry!!
    All Pit Bulls are mean!
    They all can snap!!
APBT have been banned in Miami-Dade county since 1989 and they PTS every purebred APBT they recive!
Well this is my answer to them:

Larry Buck, Acting Captain (MDPD) - (305) 805-5982, Responsible for overall administration of the Animal Services Unit.

    His e-mail is: LBuck@mdpd.com

I have written him and e-mail and this is it:
Hello, I am writing in regards to the show that aired last night. There were agents saying how Pit Bulls have locking jaws and that they are more dangerous than any other breed, that when they get out the are "hungry". I'm sorry but those statements are so false. Your agents are spreading more myths and lies for the public to believe. I understand that the American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) is banned in Miami-Dade County, but that still does not give the right to spread lies. All of American watches this show. The American Pit Bull Terrier already has a bad enough rap and they are adding to it. The APBT is no more dangerous than any other breed, they have just been in the wrong hand for too long. There are many APBT owners there that already that have to deal with this from everyday people, I see no need for the lies to be aired on TV.
Also there is a so called Pit Bull "specialist" that is always on. He knows NOTHING about this breed. I have watched the show many times and he has had me so mad that I have actually thought about driving down there (I am in Tampa). A few months ago a mans two dogs were taken from him. Why? you ask, because the so called Pit Bull "specialist" said they were APBT's when in reality they were not. This poor man had American Bulldogs, I own this wonderful breed and they are not APBT's. He had their papers and all. He was told that the papers were fake by the "specialist". I can clearly tell the difference between APBT's and American Bulldogs, and this man had American Bulldogs. I have dealt with the same problem when I was in Miami visiting. I was walking my dog when someone called in saying I was walking a APBT. The agent came out and tried to take my Storm ( my American Bulldog ). I had to explain to this man that she was in fact not a APBT that she was a American Bulldog, and that I was visiting from out of town. Thank god I had my her papers or I would of lost my dog due to the fact that they can not tell the difference. I would gladly give you the name of your agent but, this happened over a year ago and I do not remember his name.
My main reason for all of this is that I and allot of others I know think that your agents need to be more alert of the breeds and know more about them. There is no reason for these people to lie to the public. There is not breed of dog that has "locking jaws". There have many studies on the breed and there is not proof what so ever that they "snap", as on agent said.
I am going to give you a few links that I would like for you and your agents to read. They will clear up allot of myths that allot think are true. I am asking you to please take some time to read and learn and pass this on to your agents.

Here is the one I sent:

The show that aired on Animal Planet the other evening regarding American Pit Bull Terriers had to be the worst job of "reporting" I have ever witnessed. You should be embarrassed and ashamed for airing unadulterated missrepresentations and outright lies. I do not own an APBT, but I have educated myself on many breeds of dogs as well as the APBT. As a dog owner, I feel I should be responsible for knowing what I can about many breeds including my own, German Shepherd. If you had done any research at all, research that a 10 year old doing a book report could access on line, you would have realized how misinformed your agents as well as that "expert" that you have on. What made him an expert anyway? I know more about the breed than he does. I do not doubt that your agents have had to deal with APBT's that have been RAISED in such a way that they are extremley aggressive. But, make no mistake sir, they have to be raised this way, treated this way, trained this way and yes, breeding comes into play. There are many breeds of dominant dogs that can become as dangerous, if not more so, than an APBT. My own breed of dog can be trained into a highly aggressive animal. If Dade had a cluster of this type of behavior going on then I certainly understand the ban. But, perpatrating the myths and inaccuracies about this much aligned breed is irresponible and unethical. Do your research and get the facts straight before reporting. I thought that was a fundemental rule of reporting. I have never been so disgusted by something that I watched on, what was supposed to be, an educational channel. If this is your version of education, no wonder our schools are failing.

By the way, locking jaws? I don't think so (sarcasam inserted here). Do your research. And any dog that gets out might be "hungry". Do you want us to believe that it's for human flesh? Idiotic. And did you know there is a difference between the American BULL dog and the American Pit Bull TERRIER? I did. Thank you for being another efficient model of public service.

I have actually been alarmed at some of the things I have seen on Animal Planet, like the one where they show animals being born......"That's My Baby." There was a good one about a horse. And then there was one about a chihuahua. Spoiled little thing whose owners dressed her up like she was a little baby. They bred her with one of their males. No mention of health checks, pedigrees, etc.

Then the birth was taking too long. They showed the woman sitting up with the mommy dog all night, and no pups....no pups.....no pups....finally she said she would take her to the vet in another hour if there were no pups. Good lord! I am not a breeder but I would have had that dog into the emergency vet hours before. Don't tiny dogs sometimes have a lot of trouble delivering and isn't it life threatening for both the pups and the mom?! I thought so.

So finally she has the pups - the first two are dead and the third lives. I was so shocked and disgusted I never watched again.

I used to watch the zoo keeper programs that were on early in the morning when we first got Nala, and I loved those. I eventually saw them all. And things like Good Dog U seem pretty good. But some of the other shows are made by people who may like animals but really know nothing about them.

Even a few Adoption Tales have been scary - like the one about the heeler that kept getting adopted by morons for reasons like "I've always wanted a dog with one blue eye and one brown eye" and then of course they couldn't handle her. And they kept saying she bit people, when probably she was just nipping them.

Miseducation at its finest. No wonder so many new dog owners are so clueless (like I was).

I think reading this forum should be manditory for 1st time dog owners.

After reading through many threads i have learned alot, and have been able to disregard many myths I was raised to believe as fact. I used to not know a thing about APBTs, and was even scared of them. After reading up on them, and looking through the pitbull forums on here. I adopted a Pit of my own, and he has been nothing but wonderful, the total opposite of what the media, and miss informed Informers, would have us all believe.

I'd like to thank all of you, who contribute so much to this forum on the regular. I have learned alot. As the saying goes (everyone is a teacher).

    props to you all :y_the_best:

i didn't know much about pits either till i started reading, except what i heard on the news- always bad. i was scared of them and thought breed bans were good.
i started wondering "what is this? don't any other breeds attack people and do damage?"
since i've learned a lot, i've certainly changed my opinions!
