Interesting, I have to admit when the story first come out I didnt see any reason to doubt it, there were no photos, at least not were I read it but then this photo was on the RSPCA site.....Im no fish-hook expert but Ive seen enough dog fights were that area has been ripped apart by a quick 'grab and pull' (usually when the owner steps in and tries to seperate two dogs), I really doubted that the hook being there could take the weight of a dog that size probably thrashing around either when the the hook was put in or when the dog was in the water.....on the other hand Ive seen and removed plenty of (smaller) fish-hooks from dogs mouths, they usually try to eat the bait on the hook and end up with more than they bargained for.

I think the hook is either an accident, or a photoshop. There just doesn't seem to be any blood and the dog does not look like it's in distress. It is a heart wrenching picture no matter how this happened. But I am glad that the French government has always forbid such things and will not tolerate it to be done.

The dog in the picture may or may not have been specifically involved. Those actually in the situation did not live so it would have been hard to have actually retrieved an animal to show what was being done . The French government is continuing to allow this practise, that's why the petition is circulating. As for this stemming from Rag Mags, the Doris Day Foundation does not get involved in the perpetuation of myths.
    I received this email:

"Our first greyhound came from a situation off the coast of FL where the
dogs were nicked since they are such free bleeders. They were then tossed over the side of a boat as shark bait. This was back in 1996. There were 100 dogs invovled and 25 were saved. What an absolute horrible death.
Thanks for posting this on although it did bring back the horrid
memories of what Zulu almost endured."

    So much for myths.

I dont think anyone is saying that it shouldnt be stopped, it should, the first Id heard of them using cats and dogs was just recently but its actually a 'common' method with hunters, mainly in Africa looking to kill crocs to take home as trophy's.

The photo though, if this dog was not used in this then to run with this story, technically it should have some kind of disclaimer somewhere. I did look but I havent seen anything.

    kismet,
I am not discounting that this is a horrible thing or saying that it did not happen.
Did you read the information I supplied in the link? There is a statement from the French Embassy, that states they do not allow this and have not allowed it for decades.
It is not a wide spred thing and the people involved are already under investigation, one already has been brought to court. The government of Reunion Island do not allow this act to continue and arrest those that commit it.
All this said unless the Embassy representitive is just lying.
