argghh,, I am on my work to work this morning and off the side of a busy road is a woman standing there holdgin on onto 2 dogs, she has 2 small children with her, so I pull over and she said she almost hit them and needs help, no room in her car and one dog just has a license tag. this is 7:30 in the morning and animal control doesn open until 10:00. I said I would take the dogs, I get home and put them in teh back yard. Jake and Wylie are in the house freaking out. So I oput the dogs back in the SUV enough room for a few hours. I have a freind who has a firend that runs animal control and was able to get a hold of her and get me the contact info, luckily the guy was home he was just leaving and couldnt figure where his dogs were, they had travelled a 1/4 mile from their side road to this busy road. So anyway I have used an hour of my vacation time to do this which I dont mind for the dogs, but I dont like doing it for the owners!! :x :x I dont have a ceel phone, but the woman who was holding did. if they had tags she could have called and they would have been back home in minutes instead of over an hour and could ahve been more waiting for animal control open and then if they owners had been at work

    just venting

The no name tag gets me too. Even if they were microchipped you'd still have to wait until AC opened to get them scanned. I for one I don't have a scanner at home.

When I was in elementary school we had about 3 dogs turn up. One was a beautiful husky mix. Luckily she had tags so we were able to get her owner on the phone and he came to get her iall in less than 10 minutes. The other two were a GSD and a Chow. No tag, no collar, nothing. They ended up going to the humane society in search of their owners.

That not to say that people know that their dog is going to run away but whenever they're outside it's not hard to stick a collar w/ tags on, just to be safe.

believe it or not this is the 5th time I have done this in the last few years and every time, license only, I wll take the dog to the shelter as the resort, why punish the dog because of the owners stupidity. I was just talking to my boss and he says people are clueless and cant understand it. I have another guy I work with who is being all quiet and not particpating in the discussion because he lets his dogs run loose and dont wear tags at all and they arent microchipped :( :( :( and he let the dog out a few weeks ago, even though he lives on a quiet street it got hit by a car, chasing a cat. the dog is alright but it cost him around $2000 in vet bills

I would do the shelter as a last resort too, but unfortunately what happened to the other two dogs were the choice of the teachers. The husky mix we were fortunate enough to have a nice teacher that let us use the office phone to call the number on the tags.

I also hate when people have tags on their dogs with only one number that they're hardly even at. There was a GSD that we saw running by himself a few years back. A friend of mine was able to catch him and she called the tag number. The guy wasn't home so she left a message at around 9-10 in the morning and the guy called her back at nearly 2 in the morning and had the nerve to tell her that she could bring the dog over now.

We once had a dog show up at our house with both town and ID tags on....this dog was at our house overnight!!!! It was Thanksgiving eve when he showed up and I started leaving messages at his home # that he was at our house blah blah blah and it wasn't until Thanksgiving night that someone actually called me back. These people left Thanksgiving Eve for the holiday with family and apparently left their dog behind - outside. I couldn't believe it. What if the dog had gotten hit with no one home. Dog got to spend Thanksgiving with us...poor thing

Once someone I worked (at a pizza delivery place) with found a dog on a delivery. I live in a fairly small town, maybe 20,000 year round residents and 30,000 college students. Anyway the dog was found on the frist day of the week long Thanksgiving break. It had a name and number tag, but nothing else, so we called the numebr on the tag no one home, i went to the address on the tag, no one home. The dog stayed with me overnight, until I had to go out of town to visit my family, i had to give the dog a friend, they continued to call the person and stop by, nothing, When I got back in town I took the dog for another week call and stopping by everyday nothing, we finally gave it to someone else who said theyt could care for it, because our HS is almost always too full to take in animals and the pound put them to sleep. I don't know whatever happened to that dog, but I hope it found an owner. So the next thing to do is to make sure if you put the tags on the dog make sure they are up to date if you move, which is what I think happened with this dog.

My husband said last night I am going about this wrong, he said if I find a dog that only has only a license tag to drop them off at animal control. He said the owners have to pay $50 to get their dog back and in doing so hopefully they think twice about letting their dogs roam and not having id tags on them and if the owners wont pay, then they shouldnt have the dog to begin with and let teh dog get put up for adoption

Remeber when I found the beautiful Red heeler male?? And we couldn't fin the owners, All he had was his collar with a rabies tag on it from a town all the way across TExas!!! It took us nearly a week to track down the owners, to find out that they lived only a few miles away... Yet didn't bother to change tags?? was a weird situation...

My dogs have collars. Lacy had one too, she caught it on a fence though when she escaped and it came off. So i have to sympathize with some that they could have had a collar and it came off... Like Lacy's and we still haven't found her...

BUT, the people that don't do anything (LIKE MY MOTHER!!) who let their dogs run loose out here in the country where the nearest neighbor is over a mile away as well as a road, but still....

they are all microchipped, but no one else knows that. My step father is the one that has its doing... he claims that they can get caught on a fence or something and choke themselves, which is true I guess to an extent....
    But still...

Sam, every dog except for one I have found are left to roam on their own. SOme people dont let their dogs wear collars when they are confined because like you pointed out, they may get caught on something and people arent expecting their dog to get out. But these dogs do have collars with only their license

Yeah, if they have collars on then why not put a name tag on it?! I confess, I let my dogs in the backyard without their collars on. I REALLY need to get Bonnie chipped, just in case. Hmmm, I think I will call the vet and make an appointment, although I was hoping for a discounted price the next time the shelter runs a benefit or something.

But when we go out the front door - for a walk or a trip to the park or whatever - they are wearing collars with our address and phone number on them. I actually don't have their rabies or any other tags on them.
