This past couple of days, my American Eskimo dog has been coughing. I took him to the vet and the doctor said he had some kind of broncial virus. He put him on Temaril and Baytril. The cough has improved greatly, but he has been sort of out of it. Very sleepy, which I think is because of the medication. But he is also urinating in inappropriate places. I have a place where I put papers down and he was really getting the hang of going on the paper. Now, even if the papers are clean, he will walk past them and go into the living room and pee on the carpet. He won't even hike, just stand there like a statue and pees. And it isn't in just a certain spot, it's anywhere.

Is this caused from the medication? Has anyone else had this problem? I am very disappointed because he was what I thought almost potty trained to go on the papers.

If it is caused from the medication, once he's through with it (another day and a half) will he revert back to going on the papers? :?

Hmmmm..... I really think you should give your vet a call I know baytril is not supposed to have that affect but i am not familiar with the other. also different dogs react differently to meds as do people, but honestly i have never seen anything like that before really sounds like signs of an overdose but don't let me scare you i am somewhat expierienced with this type of thing as i work at ashelter and have seen and or given plenty of meds but i am not a vet so i suggest you call yours Good Luck let me know what happens please

You need to use an enzymatic cleaner (Nature's Miracle is a popular brand, sold at Petsmart) on the area he's been going and keep him away from the area for at least a few days for it to break down the odor or the urine (or whatever else it may have been). Otherwise, he's going to be drawn back to that area by the scent of the mark, dogs naturally want to go where they've went before, so you need to get rid of the mark to keep him from going back.

I agree that a call to your vets is in order to see if this is normal for the meds. If not, and he's been going more frequently/more amount then normal, can't hurt to take him in and have him checked out to be sure there isn't an infection of sorts causing it.

I have no real advice, I just wanted to ask how old is your dog? Was it paper trained before? or just since it has been sick?
You definetely need to get something to really get the pee smell out.
Also instead of (I am assuming) "normal paper" use the pup-pee pads, it has thsi smell that attracts them to it.

The Temeril may be the problem. Look to see if it's actually Temeril-P. I found this description of possible side affects:

Temaril-P (Rx) is a combination of prednisolone and
trimeprazine. Prednisolone is a cortcosteroid and trimeprazine is a
phenothiazine sedative. The side effects of corticosteroids include
increased drinking and urinating, increased appetite and sometimes panting
    or decreases in immune function.

Thanks everyone for the responses and advice. Well, we took Gianni (my little eskie) to the vet today and had him checked for heartworms. I was almost positive he didn't have them, but I read one of the symptoms was a cough, so naturally, I wanted to rule it out.

He turned out negative for heartworms :D But the vets office also said that the Tamaril-P did have the side effect of drinking more and causing more urination. They thought also that he was probably urinating inappropriate places because of it as well. Because he still has the cough, they gave me more of the medication, but reduced the dosage into half a pill rather than a whole one at a time. Hopefully, he won't feel so sleepy and the other problem will clear up as well.

I am to give them a call Friday and let them know the progress.

I will be getting the Natures Miracle, but I'm afraid I'll have to get it by the gallon  by the time he's through with the medication.

When I am not around and at night when I'm sleeping, I am keeping him in the kitchen, close to the papers and away from the carpet. But I can't keep him in there all day. He use to having the run of the house with our other little dog. She's a miniature schnauzer we rescued from a puppy mill. She was an exbreeder they were going to euthanize because she could not nurse her pups. She only had two litters. Or so the story goes...

Anyway, she has turned in to be the greatest little play mate for Gianni. They love to box and romp around. But lately, since he's been sick, he hasn't felt much like playing.

Well, anyway, I will keep you guys posted on his progress. Thanks again!
