My friend Leo adopted a 14 week staff mix puppy from the pound. He took the dog in for its free pound exam and she was fine. A couple days later she started sneezing and was acting lathargic. I work at an animal hospital so I got the puppys current weight and asked my doctor to persrcibe some antibiotics. The doctor gave me Clavamox and I gave it to my friend.

A couple days after that Leo calls me to tell me that the puppy can hardly walk. She would try to take a step forward and would wobble and fall, like she couldnt really support herself. So he went into another vet during emergancy hours. That vet said that the Clavamox I gave him was too low in dosage, causing the puppy to get worse and causing problems in her joints.

I have never heard of an URI getting so bad that it effects the dogs joints and walking. Has anyone else?
I know that a dog could be so sick that it doesnt want to move but i never heard of a URI causing joint problems.
The puppy will be fine, she is on stronger meds and will recover soon, im just wondering if anyone has heard of this?
    Thanks!

Maybe her ears were infected, causing balance problems?

Really hope the puppy is okay and I agree with Jamiya, could well be an ear infection also but Im going to play devils advocate here....has distemper been ruled out?...sorry, hate to bring that up but they often do start with symptoms of kennel cough or other URI, they can be painful to touch although thats usually a bit later and they are usually uncoordinated and weak...., they can appear to just have a URI and then sometimes recover but then they go back downhill with the latter of the symptoms I mentioned.

Sorry, didnt want to bring it up but thats what I would be looking for to rule out with the symptoms youve given. Especially as the pup is from the shelter, your in CA? I left if 2004 and that year and the year before we were definately seeing an increase in distemper in pups from a few of the shelters.
