Anyone have cats allergic to cat food??

    Hi,

A few years ago I had a cat who was allergic to cat food. He just vomited after every meal, and it was only a fluke that we found out what was wrong. A vet wanted to put him to sleep, but that cat lived for 4 more years (until he was 12) eating fish, chicken and turkey mince.

My cat Cassie who I have posted about several times lately has been sick for a while. She's booked in for an xray of her stomach tomorrow, followed by possible bariums on tuesday. She vomited on Friday night, so I decided to starve her until Saturday, and then just fed her boiled chicken. Since then she's been fine, no vomit, no diarrhoea, much perkier, great appetite. Best she's been in weeks.

I am going to still take her to the vets in the morning, but I'm feeling slightly doubtful about having the xray now. She has just seemed SO much better on the chicken. Has anyone got cats who eat that kind of thing permanently? I'm happy to prepare this kind of food for Cassie, but would worry she wasn't getting all the right vitamins. I guess there are vitamin supplements you can get to put in their food?

My vet will no doubt point me in the right direction tomorrow, but I feel like the xray should at least be postponed - there seems no point in putting Cassie through it if it's unnecessary right now.

That's my vent of the day! I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't post here!!

Ginny, I'm glad to hear that Cassie is better on the boiled chicken. She does, however, need suppliments like taurine and other essential vitamins and minerals that you can purchase from specialty pet stores. Rene was puking up blood and I believe she was allergic to fish products. She would have diarrhea and/or vomit. She ended up with gastroenteritis and was given anti-inflammatory shot and an x-ray which showed a distended small intestine. The barium study wasn't necessary for her since we found out right away what her problem was. I've since eliminated all fish foods from her diet and she's been fine ever since. Talk to your vet tomorrow. You might not want to rule out the barium study for a piece of mind. It can rule out a whole host of esophageal to stomach to intestinal disorders. I wish you all the best and good luck! Please keep us posted.

    you still having problems

I couldnt agree more with what vene said Ginny, you've been going through these problems with Cassie for a while now, get the x-rays done, they may or may not need to do the barium series, there are tests that can be done for allergies also if your vet thinks its necessary, a dog I had years ago had was tested (RAST test)as he was constantly breaking out and vomiting, turned out the ONLY food he could eat was IVD's Duck and Potato canned food (he was an extreme case though).
Oh and dont forget to take Cassie's log with you for the vet.

Thanks for your replies. I took Cassie to the vets this morning, much to her dismay! Bless her, she's a nightmare to get into her carrier - and having missed breakfast too she was NOT happy!

Anyway, I didn't see my usual vet, but saw my neighbour vet who had chatted with my usual vet about the situation at the end of last week. She weighed Cassie and her weight is good. She gave her a check over and said she seemed ok - and to keep her on the bland diet for now and see how things go. I also got a pouch of food from her - it's expensive but it's basically a food for sensitive tummies.

I think they'd been concerned there may have been a blockage but obviously with Cassie being able to digest the chicken well there isn't. Her appetite is good, she's perkier .. tonight she even played with her christmas present and was running around the lounge for a few minutes!

I will however be looking into getting the vitamins etc for her - so any further advice on that would be great. I wonder if there is stuff I can just put on her food?

And of course, this morning we agreed that if Cassie starts vomiting/diarrheoa again then she'll be straight in for the xray/barium.

It's so nice to see her looking better :D
