anyone know things about pointers?

Does anyone here have firsthand experience with pointers? I'm looking for info on how they generally respond to people - compliant and like to please, or independent and pursuing their own agenda?

I guy I work with has 2 pointers, mom and daughter, the daughter is about 2 years old now, they are great dogs, but HIGH energy and need to RUN to get their excess energy out. he says they are loving and affectionete (sp?)

anything else you want to know, BTY she sure is pretty

Well, I know about dealing with the high energy and need to run, because I have Nala. (Maybe Nala is border collie, pointer, beagle....)

Anyway. Nala is also extremely stubborn. She feigns deafness. She pretends she can't understand what you are teaching her if she isn't interested. She knows exactly what you want but chooses on a day-to-day basis whether she is going to actually comply or not. It usually depends on whatever else there is to do and what kind of treat you are holding in your hand.

There is an aussie at the shelter who is a very energetic dog and has been returned a couple times for destroying things. (Duh. The dog was bored.) But that dog STARES into your face, just waiting for you to ask it to do something. When he understands what you want, he does it fast as lightning and then is so happy to get rewarded! The shelter worker running our volunteer orientation trained him to "leave it" in about 3 minutes flat.

So, is a pointer usually more like Nala, or more like the aussie? Loves to please humans and willing to work, or independent and stubborn what's-in-it-for-me?

My old neighbors have a German Shorthaired Pointer. His markings are pretty close to Belle's (except liver instead of black). He's pretty energetic but nothing that a few good walks or a run in the park can't take care of, very friendly and very willing to please except if he gets excited by an unusual sight, sound, or smell he can be a little stubborn.

so I asked him and he said they are quick learners, and they like routine, like he takes them to run at the park, and they expect that every day, its sounds like they want to please

you described Jake to a T, I used to think he was stupid, but he is just stubborn.

now Wylie is extremely sharp and can learn real quick

Nala learns very quickly, but generally would prefer to wander off and chase a cat, LOL.

Honeys is right. Pointers like routine and they NEED exersize.
A freind of mine breeds them... they go for runs and Hunts almost daily during huntin season. But in the off season, he makes them track and trains diffrent things with them.

Their very intelligent, but need a constant routine and something to do.

I couldn't hunt things. I would probably have the dogs gently bring everything to me alive and keep them, LOL.

i couldn't really either, but the picture of it in my head seems so ideal, like wearing the camo and the dog trotting alongside of me. I can't explain it.

Well, you could probably get dressed up and pretend. Have your husband hide some pizza in the bushes or something.

    Okay....it's late....so sue me.

I too enjoy the idealized thought of hunting, but could never bring myself to shoot anything, so I shoot with a camera instead. I get a trophy(my pictures) and the animal goes unharmed...it's a lot of fun!
