Are over the counter tapeworm tabs OK?

I think one or both of the cats have tapeworms. I am finding those little rice like things around. My old vet, now deceased used to give me tapeworm pills for my dogs. I called the new vet and he won't without a fecal exam. My cousin works for PetsMart and says people buy those over the counter tapeworm tabs all the time and they are fine. They are not cheap but I am will to pay the $20 if they work. Also, if one has them does that mean they both have them?

I've never tried the OTC tapeworm tabs but am willing to try it out if my kitties ever come down with them again. One of my vets used to tab all our kitties even if only one is infested. Then I'd just tab the affected one. You have to have keen eyes to see who is infected, lol.

rule of thumb is if your cats share litterboxes if one has a parasite chances are all will...and should all be treated.
see if you vet will give you a prescription for Droncit http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_praziquantel.html and order it online if he will
A fecal check doesn't cost that much and the I see if at petmeds for $4/tablet and I think you have to do that 2x.
With the OTC products you have to give them a lot of those for them to work.
The question you have to ask is why can you get some of this stuff OTC while the stuff we KNOW works is prescription only...and will it work. I'd rather pay a little extra for something I know works and end the problem right there than have to deal with it again.
