Esperance storm eases
Heavy rain and high winds are easing in the Western Australian town of Esperance, which has been battered by a storm intensified by the remnants of ex-tropical cyclone Isobel.

The ex-cyclone combined with a surface trough to form a deep low pressure system that has dumped 185 mm of rain on Esperance since 9am (WST) Wednesday.

But the low is moving out to sea and is weakening, Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Rabi (Rabi) Rivette said.

"The low is starting to weaken. We have seen the worst of it," Mr Rivette told AAP.

"Esperance has received 153.4mm of rain in the gauge since 9am yesterday, and 31.6mm in the 24 hours before that.

"We've had a lot of rain there with a wind gust up to 111 kph about 10pm and it's been blowing gales for a substantial portion of the night."

WA Fire and Emergency Services Authority spokesman Mike Venn said no-one has been injured, but State Emergency Service crews had received 121 calls for assistance from Esperance residents as wind and rain lashed the region overnight.

"We've had flooding of houses, we've been clearing trees from roads, we've had damage with trees on roofs, some too dangerous to move because of the wind overnight.

"With those jobs, the volunteers will be going out at first light when it's safer to get up there.

"There's been a lot of sandbagging and a lot of tarping of roofs."

With powerlines down and damage to power generators, Horizon Power crews from Perth have been sent to assist local power workers to restore supplies, Mr Venn said.

"What they are doing is they are load sharing between areas around Esperance, one hour on and one hour off. Local essential services - the sewerage, water and hospital - have been guaranteed power supplies."

Full services should be restored later on Friday, Mr Venn said.

The South Coast Highway has been closed between Ravensthorpe and Esperance because of flooding.
