i woke to find both my betta's dead this morn.

    Male and female.

He had been hassling her, and my guarami had been hassling him, could this cause the death?

My tank has had no other problems at any time.

The nitrites ammonia etc are all fine, and the PH is 8.5,

He had cloudy eyes and his fins eaten when i netted him out, she didnt have any physical problems when i looked at her. The tank is two foot. 15gals. and been set up for months.

I also had a tetra die earlier this week, but he was lagging behind when i baught him in a group.

    Any input appreachiated.

Im away for a few days, but will got back asap.

Sorry to hear about your fish 3-second-memory. I once thought my betta would rather be in my community tank then in his 1g bowl. He swam around a lot more in the aquarium. He did however fight a little with some of the fish. Nothing major but it was enough to damage the mucus layer of his skin and then he got an infection and died quickly. So many things can go wrong with fish! It's hard to say for sure what it was. I now only keep my fighters alone in their 1 g and I change the water 100% once a week and let it sit overnight to get to the exact temperature. I think they feel safer when they are in a smaller tank with little/no action. NOT like the stores have them in those cups though. That is sick! Now you can go rescue more of them from the store.

Sorry about your fish. It definitely sounds like they killed eachother. As a general rule, it's not a good idea to keep bettas with gouramis or male & female bettas together. 9 times out of 10 they will fight.

I know thats just horrible they're water doesn't even get the oxygen it needs. They look sick. Which makes people naturally not want to by them. But I think I might attempt saving one of the red ones. If i can find the room for a fish bowl;ya, ya I know it's sad.

omgosh amy i feel so bad for you!!!! its the worst thing to loose a pet and its inhumane how they are treated. so many people will put them in these small bowls thinking they will be fine they had a cup when i bought it! its not fair to the fish. ::sniff sniff:: now go rescue those fishies!

    plz dont go "saving" them...

umm...actually those little cups are GREAT compared to their natural environment. i THINK they're from Africa, but they live in little dirt holes in the wild. The holes are formed by cattle's hooves. when the plains where they graze get flooded, the little holes fill up with water, and bettas deposit their eggs or whatever(i think theyre egg-layers) in the holes, and the fish are born living in little mud holes. thats all. they have evolved to have a very low metabolism just so they can. that's why they are better off in a small cup or bowl than in a tank, they are most comfortable there. No abuse is being caused by keeping them in cups. they may be neglected in other ways though. :!:

Actually, that is a really horrible myth and I really wish it would stop circulating. All fish produce waste in the form of ammonia which is toxic to them. In one of those little cups, the ammonia will build up so quickly it will reach toxic levels in a day. Plus they can hardly move in those horrible little cups. Bettas need at least 1 gallon (although personally I don't like keeping them in anything smaller than 2 gallons). But they would be much happier in something larger. I've kept bettas in 10 & 55 gallon tanks before and they were very happy.

And even by the 1"/gallon rule that everyone loves so much, a betta get's 2" so it needs at least 2 gallons.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR REPLIES AND CARING..........

I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF FISH STORES KEEPING THEIR FISH IN CUPS.

WHERE I GET MY FISH FROM , THE BETTA'S ARE IN COMMUNITY TANKS WAY OVER 1 GALLON, THEY ARE VERY WELL TREATED, AND ARE WITH FISH WHO THEY WONT HARM, OR WILL BE HARMED BY..........

I AGREE WITH T-CHELLE AND ONEWOLFS DREAM AND EVERYONE WHO SAYS A CUP IS BAD FOR YOUR FISH.

HOW THE HELL IS IT GOING TO BREATH?
I WOULDNT BE SUPRISED IF THE OWNER JUST RAMS A STRAW IN EVERY HOUR AND JUST BLOWS A COUPLE OF BUBLES IN AND THATS IT.

HOW DO THE POOR THINGS LIVE WHEN THE CANT TURN ROUND.

I THOUGHT MY GUARAMI WAS EVIL WHEN I GOT HIM, HE HAD THAT GLINT IN HIS EYE WHEN I PUT HIM IN MY TANK. AND ATTACKED EVERYONE. HE IS NOW IN MY BOYFRIENDS TANK, AND THE GUARAMI IS THE SMALLIST FISH IN THERE I RECKON!

    THANK YOU AGAIN.,

    amy
