what age should i bring it home at?

    is 6 weeks okay??

i have a older dog also here a fox terrier x who has always been around other dogs, and is very well house trained and has beena round other peoples pups alot.

is it okay if i bring this new pup home at 6 weeks, and will my dog act as if its its mother?

    thanks..

First, welcome to the boards! :D

My opinion on this is that you not bring home a puppy that young! I did a lot of research before getting our 2 shih-poos and what I have read is that the best time to take a puppy home is no earlier than 8 weeks. I even found a few breeders that wouldn't let their pups go until 9-10 weeks due to the "fear period" that puppies go through at 8 weeks (really loud noises, stresses tend to affect them more during this fear period).

Puppies learn valuable lessons from their mother (and playing with their littermates) and taking them away too soon isn't good for them and may make your job a bit more difficult. I'm really not sure if your present dog will take the place of the puppy's mother...

Hi welcome to the board, we're so happy to have you

    About your question:
I have a 6month Maltese (Riley), I did a lot of research on Maltese pups while I was waiting on bringing him home. There are several websites that tell you that 12weeks is the YOUNGEST you should be able to bring them home IF the breeder knows that they're doing. I guess b/c with toy breeds there is more of a risk of their sugar dropping and getting very sick possibly death and it would save you and the breeder a lot of trouble and heartache in the end to wait. HOWEVER my breeder let me bring home Riley @ 7wks but he was a strong puppy for his age, but I had to take special precautions here are some tips the breeder gave me:

    (1) Their 1st wk home put Kayro Syrup in their drinking water to help keep their sugar up incase they're not eating b/c of their new home & new surroundings.
    (2) If you notice your puppy sleeping a lot, acting week, or lathargic take a medicine dropper and give them the Kayro Syrup orally. (I did steps 1 & 2 for atleast the first 2 weeks just to be safe). I even gave him the syrup as a treat at times, he loved it.
    (3) Pay attention to their stools if they're runny they may have an intestinal bacteria/virus, the earlier you catch it the better your pup will be in the long run!!
    (4) MOST IMPORTANTLY take your new puppy to the vet within 72 hours within bringing them home. (I'd say 48 just to be safe). If you know the date you've set up with the breeder to pick up ur new pup, go ahead and schedule your appointment that way its already out of the way.

Hope that helped if you ever have anymore questions Pri Message me.

I agree with the others. 10 weeks sometimes 12 for tiny breeds.

 First of all, WELCOME to the board!!!

I completely agree with all the previous replies!!!

I wouldn't bring your pup home until he/she is AT LEAST 8 weeks old!!! (However, I prefer 10-12 weeks!) Waiting to bring home your pup until the appropriate age really is to his/her benefit in countless ways!

Best of luck with your new pup!!! :D
