Hi everyone. I new to this, but was passing throught and decided I would love to join.

Anyways...I was wondering if anyone on here has had any luck with there dog/puppy having the parvo.

Last Wednesday/Thursday night my puppy (7 week old pit bull) started vomiting in the night, every hour. I knew he had eaten something bad that day cause he had gotten away from me and when I got him was eating something ( it was dark I couldnt see) that smelled HORRIBLE!! So when he was throwing up that night, i immediately thought it was from that. That morning, he was still vomiting so I took him to the vet incase he got dehydrated and when I was leaving, a girl downstairs told me to get him checked for Parvo cause he dog had been sick all last night too, and she thought another persons dog had had parvo in our apartment complex.

Well, he had is test, which came back positive  I couldnt afford keeping him at the vets office which was going to cost more than $500.00, because my boyfriend just recently got laid off work. So I took him home and have been giving him ammoxicillan (sp?) pedialyte, and pepto bismol. Which the vet told me they havent had much luck with people who took them home to care for them.

He quit throwing up around 12:30 pm Thursday ( that same day). He pooped diarrhea twice that day, and then never had it again. However he slept all day long and around midnight got up and started drinking and eating fine and wanting to play with my other dog. All of Friday he played and acted completely normal. Today is Saturday, I havent been home most of the day, but he threw up once this morning, but still doesnt have any diarrhea. My boyfriend says that hes been laying around all day, but when I came home he's been playing and causing the usual trouble that he does  But he's looking skinny. He eats, but not as much as he should.

Is there anything I can feed him that will help him put on weight...maybe rice?

Also, is this normal for puppies that have parvo to act so good? Or do you think he might go back downhill?

Ohhh Whitney So sorry to hear this.. I'm sure I heard that one gal on this forum had a dog that had parvo and that the dog pulled through really well..
So there is a positive side too..

If he is eating and drinking, and stopped vomiting and diarrhea..Than that itself is a good sign

Keep a really good on on him, and at any sign of him in discomfort, take him to the vet, straight away.

Agree with Chezza, its a good sign that he can keep food and water down, you really need to be careful though, dont let him eat or drink too much at once, small helpings every hour or two is much better than say 3 meals a day, small amounts of water at regular intervals also, this will help reduce the chances of vomiting further.

Dont let him play too much, its kinda like when a young kid has really bad flu, they suddenly feel better for a day, go mad and play all day, they overdo it and can go back downhill again, your pup could do the same so restrict his activity for a few days, maybe a week.

Definately watch for any setbacks though, if you see any (if the vomiting and diarrhea starts up again or he gets real lethargic/weak) and if you see that hes gettting dehydrated then you need to get him back to the vets ASAP. Keep in mind that as a Pit Bull he is in the high risk category of breeds that generally dont do well with this, (along with Rotts, Great Danes, GSDs Am Staffs, Dobies). That said I know of quite a few that have pulled through with home care with round the clock care.

    Good luck.
