Bull Terrier experience anyone?

For our next dog, hubby and I are considering a Bull Terrier. Although I worked as a vet tech for 12 years, we didn't get that many Bull Terriers in. I've never owned a terrier, and was wondering how they are as watch dogs. I'm assuming pretty good, considering terriers in general tend to be a bit feisty. Another question - how are they around horses? Do they tend to chase them? We want a short haired breed that will protect the property, and also be a much loved family pet. From everything I've heard, they are good with children, but how about small dogs - we have two Pugs. Are they generally hyper like a lot of terriers? Thanks for the info!

I don't know anything about them But I've always liked their looks.

Let me know how it turns out and be sure to post lots of pics!!

When I was younger my dad's friend Sam used to show/breed them.

As a watch dog I'd say, from the ones I've known, that the only thing they have going for them is their looks. The two Sam had were the friendliest dogs you could meet. When you'd drive up to the house they would come right up to the truck to greet you without even a bark.

They're usually ok with other animals once their raised with them. My dad's friend owns a farm so his dogs were around cows, donkeys, sheep and goats. They were never too interested in them and kept their distance. They can be dog aggressive though.

They do have a lot of energy and will push your limits like other terriers but they're very clownish with their anitcs.

Spuds McKenzie was one. I have a friend that grew up with one and she tells the funniest stories. One day her neighbor found him sleeping in her guest room!

I was working with a traininer this past weekend for upcoming shows. He handles Bull Terriers and he said that dog agression is common in the breed, they used to fight them.

He said also that in his experiance. They are wonderful family dogs. But have known some to be nasty towards small children.

I'd have to aree with the trainer. They can be wonderful with well behaved, considerate children but don't take well to being teased.
