Oh- it was so embarrassing....we're at my parents this weekend, and Cameron has taken to-- "humping" their dog Pacer. My parents think it's funny to watch, but I am so curious as to why she does this. She has no idea what she's doing and does not in anyway do it "right"- she either climbs square on his back and goes to town, or I actually looked outside and saw at one point Cameron had climbed on Pacer backwards and was doing it on his head!!! It looked like a doggy porn I swear :? The weird thing is, she has never done this with any other dog but Pacer. When they first met Pacer tried this with her a few times (they were both fixed so no worries)- could she have learned this from him? Does she think it's a way of showing affection? She absolutely adores Pacer and follows him everywhere. I'm just so curious because I didn't think females really did this!

Humping can also be a dominance behavior....maybe this is the case in your situation? I also read that some dogs do this when they are nervous/anxious sort of like a nervous person would tap their foot.

Jasper does it for attention I swear she does. SHe know's she isn't allowed to do it, but it's like 'hey mum, look at me'....

if this is the only dog she does it to I would think it is dominance, he dd it earlier, now she has the power and is getting him back, but my roommates dog did that to everything (not many dogs though bc she was the shy skiddish type) and her problems was her anal glands had to be released, but she also scooted across the floor. so it is probably a dominance thign

    HEy! Safe sex!!! Wahoooo!!!!!

No seriously. It's probably a dominance thing. I see puppies do it to each other and spayed bitches too. I wouldn't worry about it. If its emabarassing you too much. Distract her.

I got a mental picture of this and thought, "that little scamp."

Grace does this with Reese whe they're playing and starts rolling around. It's like the excitement of playing brings it on. Reese is so good natured that he just looks her and wonders what the heck she's doing. :?:

You'd think that boy dogs would do this instead of the girls.

My Mom had a Chi/Mix that would do that to the cat. Always happened when company was over.

Do dogs try to have dominance over other animals, I wonder, like dogs over cats?

hehe, what a little hussy!! Taking advantage of boys like that. :D

    Probably a dominance thing.

My dad's chi humps the cat ALL THE TIME!! It's too funny. The cat is SOOO fat and just lyes there. hehe What a stud!

It's not necessarily a dominance thing. It can be just a way of playing. I posted an article about that here once. Let me see if I can find it...

Bonnie does this to Nala as well....only she humps Nala's head while Nala is on her back on the floor.....it's pretty embarrassing.

I think everyone is right, it is about both anxiety and dominance & control... When we first brought Rusty home, he was a very anxious little dog. He had been abandoned and we rescued him from the side of a highway. And he did this behavior a LOT....with people, other dogs, his toys... we were really beginning to wonder
But I did some looking into it, talked with his vet, etc. And we concluded that it was about his anxiety from everything that had happened to him, and about trying to find his place in the new "pack" order he had suddenly found himself in, and his fear of being so out of control of it all.
But with time, it did subside, and now he never does it. I think because he feels more secure, knows where he is in the family pack, and doesn't feel so out of control anymore.
I'm wondering if for some reason your dog feels a bit intimidated by this other dog, or maybe when they are together, there is just a bit of desire for some "one upmanship" going on?
Our vet says it has nothing to do with sex, it's always a dominance or control thing, and that it's harmless for the dog, just embarrasing for the owner.!
Just curious.... is your dog a pug/beagle cross? She's very cute!

I found my old post. Here it is again:

Here is some info from http://www.wagntrain.com/BodyLanguage.htm:

I haven't been to that page before, but it seems to have some good info (which I have read elsewhere, helping to confirm its value). It has pictures of different body language and ways you can communicate with your dog, including "calming signals" (see "On Talking Terms With Dogs : Calming Signals" by Turid Rugaas).

That's interesting,Jamiya....the part about lower ranking dogs doing it to show alliegance with higher ranking dogs in the pack. That would make even more sense in our case with Rusty...because he is a very submissive dog. I didn't really think he was exactly doing it to try and show dominance, but had it figured out that it was something to do with his place or rank in the order of things.

Jasmine is also always humping Sebastain his head mostly. Now that i got the new kittens she grabs poor little butters and pulls him under her and starts to hump him it's kinda funny but the poor little kitten looked scared when i made her stop. She is always humping or if she is not humping sebastain and they are playing she tries to bite him in the wrong spot everytime she runs next to him and puts her head underneath him and tries to grab the wrong thing poor little boy
