Hi everybody. Its been a very long time since I have been on this site. And then we had hurricane Katrina came and destroyed our homes.
I lived with my dad and we had an oak tree in the back yard that fell on the house. (Louisiana)
The roof was ripped of his second home.

Any way at least we are all ok. I moved to Texarkana, Arkansas.

Anyway, I hope everybody else is ok.

So, I came back to this site because ya'll are really good with giving advice and knowing animals.

Well, for the past 3 days, my Pit Bull, Shianne, has been acting very strange.
Shes fine when you play with her but when you stop she goes right to the corner of the couch and curls up and doesnt want to come from that spot. She used to beg for treats. Now I can just barely get her to come get one from me and she goes back to her spot instead of begging for more. Now THAT is just odd.
Also, when I let her outside, she stays by the door and whines and barks and jumps on the door to come back in... she has never done that before.
And she has never ever whined when in her kennel. Now when I put her in there she just whines.
I had to sit in the room with her the other day until she calmed down and then I had to sneak out.

I dont know what to do.

We think maybe she was spooked by something but we dont know what and we dont know how to fix the problem.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

I also wanted to add that I bought her a new squeaky toy a few days ago and that I noticed she has been acting a little aggressive and that is not like her at all.
She has been trying to take this toy with her everywhere and even outside and she has never done this with a toy before, not even with a bone.
If we throw the toy, she runs to get it, puts it in her mouth very gently and then cuddles it close to her.

I never put the toy with her in the kennel yet because she would eat her toys so maybe I will try putting the toy in the kennel with her tonight to see how it goes. I dont think she will eat it. She treats it like its her baby.

Has anybody ever had this happen to their dog? Whats the best thing to do?

Angie...Texarkana in my hometown. I lived on the Texas side though. Sorry Shianne is acting funny. It sounds like she tramatized in some way. It could be the hurricane, being in a new place...especially if she's lived in one place her whole life. She might miss all the familiar smells of home. I would set a rountine for her so she can get a little more secure and know what will happen each day.
Annie has actually done the same thing with a squeaky toy. She was horrified if it actually squeaked. If we squeaked it she would look distraught and when we threw it she would carefully scoop it up with her mouth careful not to put any pressure with her jaws and not make it squeak, and put it next to her and not bring it back ot us. It was like she thought we were hurting it. I ended up taking the squeaker out of that toy, and she would play with it then. She eventually decided she liked squeaky toys and now she carries them around squeaking them as much as she can. Go figure.
If you need anything just let me know. My parents and several friends still live in Texarkana and would be happy to help out.

Cool, where do you live now?

I don't think it has anything to do with the hurricane. We have been here since Sept. 10th. She has been normal. Its just the past 3-4 days and the only thing I can think of that has changed it that I got her a new toy.
Also she does squeak the toy when we are playing with it but when she gets it to herself, she doesn't.

I just took her out, and she did what she had to do really quick and then ran back to the door ready to go back inside.

I put her new and old squeaky toys in the kennel with her last night and it helped a little but she still whined some. Just not as much.

Thanks for offering to help but I have what I need for now. I am looking for a job right now and have my first interview on Tuesday.

    Anyway, thanks for the reply!

BTW, aren't you the one with Annie? How is she?

Well...that's certainly puzzling..Don't you wish they could talk?
I live in Missouri right now, but am looking at some land near Atlanta, TX..so I'll be back in the area around June I think. Annie is doing well, exceot she broke out the front window yesterday while I was gone. She was unhurt thank goodness. I don;t know what has gotten into her.
If you are looking for a vet in Texarkana, I can't really say as who is the best...our family has had good experiences with Westridge, but they are a bit expensive...everyone on the Arkansas side I think is pretty good. Just do not go to DeShawn Merrill at Pleasant Grove Animal Hospital. I used to work for her and would not reccommend her to anyone.

Glad to hear that Annie is ok! :D

Shianne was playing with Cookie (boyfriend's parents dog, a collie) and got a scratch on her eye. So we took her to the vet for that, I think it was Wisdom..(?) Pretty sure. They were really nice and didn't cost too much for the meds. We took Shianne back to get the check up on her eye and it was free, have to take her back in a few days to get the med to make it so that she doesn't get a scar on her eye.

Anyway, good luck finding a place in Texas.

Is she fixed? is there a chance she could be pregnant? I had a female boxer a few years ago and she started doing the same types of things for no reason out of the blue. When I took her to the vet, we found out she was pregnant.

Ok, so I took Shianne to the vet today and her eye is healed up. They gave us some meds so that she doesn't have a scar on her eye.

We asked him about changing the information in her microchip since we just moved and he said I would have to call the company and gave me a website.

We took the toy away from Shianne yesterday and she started acting more normal. She hasnt been eating much at all and yesterday she actually ate all her food and thats normal. So we decided to keep the toy away from her for a few months.
We told the vet about it and he said that she had very little milk but not enough to mean anything he said she might come in heat a little early and that it would be ok to give her the toy back if she continues to eat.

He said everything else looks fine.
    Good health.

When we first took her to the vet here she weighed about 73 lbs and now she weighs 69 lbs. So she lost a little weight, which is a good thing bc shes a little big. Now she has more room to run out in the yard so shes loosing some flab! lol
    :D

Thanks everybody for all the replys!

    Help!I am out of sollutions!

 I have a problem with my sons brittle pit,Jucee, everytime we stake out in the yard to play, all she wants to do is jump and bark! She doesn't shut up until we bring her back in.My son can leave her sight and she has a fit! When he leaves to go to his dads, she gets in the toilet paper, and whatever else she get a hold of!She only minds him,we can tell her at night to get into her taxi and she won't listen,he tells her and she does it.How can we get her to mind? Are they a one owner dog,or what?I already figured out she is very possive of him.My son is 13,I'd hate to know what she's gonna be like when he starts dating! :p

Hey, I actually had a dog go through the same thing, but she wasn't a Pitt, she was a Husky, and she was unable to have puppies, and every time she went through her time in season, she would take her squeaky toy, and she would guard it like it was a real animal, if you tried to take it she would bite at you. my pitt bull isn't old enough to g through anything serious yet...so as far as the agression things go, you should maybe talk to a vet, alot of pitt agression comes from bloodlines, also if you keep her outside, you should see if maybe there are kids that might do mean things, like throw rocks or sticks or things that would explain the not wanting to be outside and she could be going through depression bc of it.

We took both the squeaky toys away from Shianne and she, since then, has been acting normal.

    Thanks for all the replys.

Your dog is really sad....she misses something. The way you are living is not the same so she is pretty sad about it. was there anything she liked where you use to live? if so you might want to try putting it back that way. if she liked going to the park, maybe take he/she to the park. 8)
