Can cats be right handed or left handed

My little girl Maine Coon (actually now a year and a half old) has learned to open the kitchen cabinets. She learned to open a pull out drawer long ago and I put a lock on it. Now she has learned with her left paw to open some kitchen cabinets. But only cabinets with the hinges on the right and only using her left paw. Is it possible cats are right or left handed (pawed). BTW... she is the sweetest thing and a real joy to have around. All 15 pounds of her.

I've heard yes on the question....and I got to thinking my Missy likes to open cupboard doors too and it's always with her right paw and a right to left opening.
What a gorgeous kitty you have BTW

    Opening the cupboard doors

My Baz kitty would open them also, I think he was right handed. He was the only one that taught himself how to do that.

And Mary is right, your kitty is gorgeous!

We just adopted our 6th and I think he may have some Maine Coon in him.

Both cats and dogs are right and left handed, somewhat like us. My female rottie is left handed because its the only paw she will use when I ask to shake, the paw she uses to move/dig on something. While her brother is right handed for the same reason. I think its the coolest thing!

Thanks for the replies. Now if I could just get her to put the dishes away:)

I wish I knew where I heard this - but I heard that in the cat world, they are opposite of humans. Meaning - most cats are actually left-pawed. But, they also found some in a study that were right-pawed.

They gave a bunch of cats a test and had them try to paw something out of a jar. Most the cats used their left paw for it.

I thought that was interesting... now if I could just remember where I knew that from. It's been years.

I think Copper is ambidextrious as he swats at me with both paws equally. But I've wondered this too.
