We have a 7 year old cat and have recently noticed his belly fur is gone! He does not seem sick or acting any different. We don't really know if it is falling out or if he is pulling it out from maybe the heat?? Has anyone heard of this?? :?

Hi. Welcome to the site. :D I've never seen a brand new member get their avatar pic up so quickly! LOL. You may want to watch your kitty as much as possible and see if he's the one licking/pulling his fur off. If he's not, then a trip to the vet is a good idea, as this can be caused by a whole range of different things. Some are serious and some are not. If he is doing it himself, then it's behavioral. This means that something is most likely stressing him out (i.e., people, other cats/animals that are either inside or outside and so on).

Hi KittyTales. :D When the vet said he is fine, that just means that there is no medical problem with him. That doesn't mean that he doesn't have behavioral problems. Meaning that something may be causing him stress and he's licking/pulling his hair out. The only way to resolve that is to find out what is causing him stress. Then once you figure it out you try and get rid of the stressful problem. Sometimes it's not easy as it can be another neighborhood cat and you can't stop that cat from wandering around and stressing your kitty out. But, you can get something like Feliway with ComfortZone to calm your kitty down and help him feel more relaxed.

Thanks for the welcome! My husband did notice that "Fatguy" is pulling it out himself. So I guess we will just have to figure what is stressing him out. I live in NH and it has been really humid lately...maybe it's the weather?? Nothing else in his life has changed lately?? But thanks for your quick reply!! :D

How about fleas/mites? I don't think a cat would pull their fur out due to heat, but I could be wrong about that.

I think that we may have figured out what his problem is. My husband went on a trip and was gone for a week, it could have freaked him out. They have never been apart that long with the exception of us getting married/honeymoon. Thank you for all of your great ideas!

That could be the cause. Our kitties do not like it when we leave them for a long period of time. Tell your husband to just give him lot's of love and attention and see if he stops pulling his fur out. If he's still doing it, you may want to just take him to the vet to rule out any medical problems ( such as itchy skin disorders or fleas). I hope your kitty gets better soon.

Our kitty has been pulling out her fur, too, but more so on her sides and back. We recently found something that seems to be working--flax seed oil. I posted our experience under "Fur pulling." Check it out and see if it is of help to you.

    Thanks
I think he is going to be OK. It was stress from my husband going away for a week. Fatguy is the husbands cat so it freaked him out that he was gone for that long. Now that he has been back and giving him lots of attention he is doing better. Plus the fact that my husband has been layed off for about 3 months now and his "normal" routine has changed alot. And I think that is effecting Fatguy alot too. And then to top it off he leaves him....but all is well now! It's areally amazing how "changes" effect our kitties :qm4:
