Shadow, my Mom's cat, has recently stopped going to the bathroom in her litter box and is now going on little rugs and inside of laundry baskets. The only thing we can think of is that she changed the litter recently, but my mom never uses the same litter all the time anyway, (she buys what's on sale  ) Why is she doing this?

If you think its the litter you could try switching back to one that she has previously used reliably. If not, have her checked for a UTI as soon as possible.

Cats a weird like that...they hate change, especially in their litter. If they dont like the feel of it on their paws, alot of times they wont use it. If she used her litterbox religiously before, but stopped when it was changed, that's more than likely your problem. Tell your mom that she needs to stick to one litter and not just whats on sale. It'll save you the hastle and the dry cleaning money.

Pooping or peeing or both? If it's just peeing, I would think it's a UTI or crystals. If both, I would think it's the litter. Or has anything else changed in the house?

Well, she's been peeing in baskets and pooping on small rugs.. never both in the same place. I have told my Mom that I think it's the litter. So we're going to try changing it back to the last thing she had. Hopefully this works!

I also firmly believe that NONE of those odor neutralizer/enzymatic cleaners work. So if she's soiled anywhere that can be discarded, I would do so. I have tried almost everything and I swear my big orange boy will come by and do that open mouth smell thing right where I cleaned. And with 2 dogs and 2 cats, I am constantly cleaning! :x
