I have taken my tabby cat to the vet because he started coughing like he was trying to bring something up. Kinda sounded like a smokers cough. Vet said he had a hair ball problem gave me some cat lax to help and we bought special cat food specifically designed to help dislodge the hairball. Well it's been three months and he has gotten significally worse and my wife and I don't have money right now to take him in. We have tried cat grass and a few different types of cat food to help with hair ball problems and none seem to work. If anyone can offer any help it would be much appreciatted, if not he will be going to the vet in sept or oct whenever we can afford it.

Does your kitty hack up a furball? My kitties make hacking sounds too once in awhile and a furball usually comes out.

I don't know what to suggest. Maybe someone else will be able to help.
Maybe you call the vet's office and mention that your kitty is still having trouble and maybe they could advise you over the phone.

Hi and welcome to Auspet. :D You could try this: mix 1 tsp. mineral oil or petroleum jelly per 10 lb. body weight into your cat's food.
Don't use other oils, because it they will be ineffective. Good luck.

:m23: and welcome! Friskies hairball remedy (chicken flavor) usually works for us. After Pumpkin had her lion cut, she hasn't coughed up any furballs. She hacks alot too and she's 12.

Have you tried Petromalt? Not the healthiest of ingredients (it's petroleum-based and bad for the liver) but might offer your cat some immediate relief. Cats seem to like the taste and will eagerly lick it off your finger, and it works quickly. If this has been happening for 3 months, though, something else is probably wrong. Hope you can get him to a vet soon. Good luck to you and the little guy.
