Cat has balding spot on stomach.......

and I have no idea why. I noticed it this week. There's a spot on her stomach, between her back legs, about the size of a coffee cup (like you sat one on her stomach) where the fur is thin.

She has a thick coat. She's a 9 year old tuxedo cat. It doesn't seem to be causing her any problems. It's not sore or anything, as I rubbed it and she rolled into her belly rub position and started to purr. I also gently tugged at it to see if the fur readily came out and it didn't.

She is shedding pretty fierce right now (she does every time the seasons change). She does have dry skin back by her tail, but we spray her with coconut oil stuff that the vet gave us and it works pretty good. We regularly brush her. She's in a good mood and eating and drinking like normal.

I don't know if she's overgrooming or not. We both work during the day and don't get to watch her except for at night.

She is a skittish cat, though. Nervous around strangers. My in-laws were in 2 weeks ago and she hates them. They have 10 cats, 2 dogs, and a bird and I know she hates their smells. She constantly hisses at them and runs away.

I have an appointment for her next week at the vet, but I'm still concerned and if it's major, I want to get her to the emergency vet....

    Any thoughts?

could be any number of things...

top of my head, allergy to a flea bite. could be stress... could be excessive grooming... could be Alopecia Areata... happens in humans.. (i'm a sufferer) and it can happen in cats. Alopecia is where the hair ust falls out for apparently no reason.. the areata means circular.. so hence falls out in circular areas.

It is in a circle...that would make sense. My mother in law picked her up and upset her something fierce. I'm hoping her cats don't have something she may have passed on. I'm glad her appointment is on Tuesday....

:m23: and welcome. My orange and white tuxedo cat Monty is very similar to yours. He sheds a lot and is skittish and nervous around strangers. Switching foods from Iams to Wellness and Solid Gold has made his dander and excess shedding almost non-existent. As for her bald spot, it could be anything.

Good luck on the vet visit and keep us posted on her condition. :m10:

Thanks. I have her on Purina One for Hairballs because she has a bad hairball problem. The vet said it was a good food.

I'll put up a picture later. She's a cutie, if I do say so myself...

aside from the flea bite, none of the things i mentioned are contagious :)

if u just recently changed her food it could be she's allergic to it... or maybe she's developed an allergy *shrugs with a smile* could be anything... thats why there are vets ;)
