in the back (not sure which they are though) canines are gone, molars are gone, and all the little front ones are gone. The 4 she does have are on one side.

No signs or tartar at all, no signs of any gum disease and the remaining teeth are on a scale of 1-4 (with 4 being the worse) a 1. So her entire mouth rated a 1.

Now I ask (and Chess I hope you read this) if after 2 years of a possible dental disease and a cat hasn't had a dental since what are the chances of their being no more gum disease, no tartar buildup and no other bad teeth? Having dealt with extreme peridontal disease myself I know having a few teeth pulled doesn't take care of the problem - it remains.

No sign of a possible injury either as all the remaining teeth are fine and in the correct spot. I hate to think this girl may have lost her teeth cause she bit someone - but I know people will do that sort of thing.

We'll never know...and I emailed the shelter she was in - they didn't even look close enough to know she was missing teeth. No wonder she was aggressive there.

Hi Mary. :D Realistically, a vet could not give a proper diagnosis of the teeth and gums, without doing actual pocket probings (checking the gum attachment to the tooth), checking for mobility of the teeth and in general just really getting in there and doing a very thorough examination. Unfortunately, with most cats the only way to do this is under anesthetic.

As for the possibility if Cleo actually had advance periodontal disease and the vet at the time treated her for this, by removing teeth and giving her a good scaling on her remaining ones and then not having any signs of periodontal disease two years later, I suppose anything is possible. Every cat is different. Perhaps it took Cleo years to get to that point. I think the best way to have your question answered is to find the vet who did dental work on her. They will be able to tell you what was done on her and for what reason. I too would hate to think that anyone would have a cat's teeth pulled out for the sole reason that they are biters. I didn't even know this was legal. What a terrible thing to do to any animal. :(

p.s. Lynnhaz, you are so lucky! I have never once found a baby tooth that fell out, from any of my cats. I always look, but I have yet to find one. :(

Chess I know they'll do that with dogs that bite :x I have a friend with a nasty little Shih Tzu and she was going to have his canines pulled cause he's a biter. I told her wouldn't it be better to either correct the behavior or muzzle the beast - she looks for easy ways out. I talked her out of it though...nasty little dog. And it's nasty cause she spoils the beast rotten.

I did call the vet listed they have no records of Cleo

well that is awful..i havent heard of that either....

but i have heard of people having their animals vocal cords cut so they wont make noise....

in fact...my girlfriends whose husband was going to have that done to their dog said that was rather common...

i was appalled...is this common???
