Hi there!! My dog has not had a bowel movement in 8 days, the vet can't find anything wrong, so she told me to give the dog cod liver oil caps 3 times a day until doggy goes. If anyone has done this could you please let me know if it works and how long it takes before it is effective??? Thanks!!!

I did take my dog, her name is petey, to the vet last week and she was put on a bland diet of plain rice, mind you she hates it but at least she is eating now. Thanks for getting back to me and for the advice, I'd better go because we are having a nasty storm and my pup needs me, (WHAT A LITTLE SUCK!!!)

I'm sure it would loosen stools. It's not good to use as a supplement for dogs, however. A better choice would be wild fish oil or salmon oil. Cod liver oil is very high in vitamins A and D. You can overdose with vitamin A and that is very dangerous.

wow really so do people overdose on vit A & d or dogs? and what happens then? is it severe or mild, or justdepends on how much you have? How do you know so much jamiya?

I don't know how common it is, but you CAN overdose on certain vitamins, especially the fat-soluble vitamins. Here is a bit of info on vitamin A overdose:

I know things because I read a lot. There are many more things that I DON'T know than I DO know, however. My stack of books to read is going to touch the celing any day now.

I know about vitamin A particularly because I did a TON of research before switching my dogs to a raw diet. Vitamin A is in liver and it is very important that you get enough vitamin A. But since it is toxic if you have too much, you have to exercise a little caution and common sense. As in most things, moderation is the key.

I don't worry about exact amounts. I figure my dogs would kill and eat a chicken every few days if they were wild, so I feed them a chicken liver or a piece of beef liver about the size of a chicken liver every other day or so.

I buy Grizzly Salmon oil it comes in a gallon jug with a pump so you just add it to your dogs food. It makes their skin and coat so healthy & shiny. I order it from the DRs Foster & Smith Catalog.
Salmon oil helps to keep many species of wild animals such as grizzly bears, eagles, otters healthy and strong. The Omega 3 & 6 not only keep the coat and skin healthy but help strengthen the heart and add to overall virility.

Was the rice due to some other issue? Because I know rice binds up a dog not loosen him up. Someone had told my mother in law to use Olive Oil. I told her to check with her vet. Of course, my husbands family is Macedonian so they think olive oil is the answer for everything! (that and feta cheese!)

Grizzly Salmon Oil is a good one. It comes from farmed salmon, I believe, so I started buying Timberwolf Organics Salmon Oil instead since it is made from wild salmon. But then I left the pump bottle out of the refrigerator by mistake and was afraid to use it so I just said the heck with it and bought gelcaps from Wal-Mart. It was pretty funny watching the dogs figure out what to do with gelcaps the first time. Don't do it inside. Salmon-flavored carpet is NOT a good idea.

Sargesmom, The vet put her on that diet because she was vomiting for a few days, and she told me to keep petey on the diet for a couple of weeks and also gave me some APO's to give my dog. She is doing alot better now, and hasn't thrown up,but I am VERY concerned with Petey not going. Thank you Jamiya for the 411 on cod liver oil, I will get her some salmon oil today , and thanks again all!!! GOTTA GO GET SOME OIL!!!

Yeah, lube her up! LOL. Can anyone confirm that fish oil will work in that capacity? Or are there properties of cod liver oil or mineral oil that work better for constipation?

I have also heard to give raw pumpkin. It seems that it works for both constipation and diarrhea, but I have yet to figure out how.

Well guys...I think the cod liver oil is starting to work because she is outside right now sniffing around to do her business, I called another vet and he said that a rice diet for more than 2 days is bad for a dog and that is why they bind up, so I made her a small steak tonight and did she eat, it's so good to see her actually eating something without being forced. Thanks all for your advice, and I WILL be talking to you later!!! Take care....Penelope

I have been giving my two fish oil now for about three weeks now. I have noticed that my terriers coat does not seem as thick. any views on that. He's double coated and usually is very full coated right now.
