Well, for starters, they need a heck of a lot more room. Cons need at least 15 gallons each. If they even fit in a 2 gallon they're either severely stunted or they're too young to breed. And even if they did breed, what are your plans for the hundreds of fry they would produce? Most LFS's won't take cons because they are so prolific.

Also, in your other post you said you had a pacu. I hope you know these fish can get well over 2 feet long. Plus they should be kept in groups which means they really need at least 1000 gallons (that's red pacus, black pacus get 3 feet long and need a lot more space). They really aren't suitable for being kept as pets so I suggest you return it.

I would have to also agree with tchelle about the pacu on con, if I were you I would return the pacu and get a 20 gallon tank for the convicts, are you sure you mean 2 gallon, 12 gallon or 20 gallon, it could be a typo, but anyways you need a 20 gallon. Taking it from someone who has bred convicts for over a year now, I would not suggest breeding them unless you already contacted your lfs and told them if they are interested in taking them off your hands, or you have someone who you now for sure will take the babies off your hands. Convicts breed like crazy and believe me you will get sick of it. Some lfs I went to would not even take them for free. So, what out. With all these warnings in mine and you still want to breed them (many regret it) all they need is a tank for themselves or else they will kill every other living organism put with them (even an socar twice their size), some rocks and a clay flower pot on its side is very ideal. Some might dig many holes and have the fry in there but anyways, if the convicts are old enough and you are sure you have a male and a female they will go into the cave and lay their eggs and then the eggs will hatch some time in the future and then blah blah blah.

well you pmed me and i replyed and gave you endless paragraphs of info.

And, nameless, you said 20g. 20g is more appropriate for 1 convict just itself and maybe if its melow it wont kill fish with it.

A 29g+ is alot more appropriate for a breeding pair of convicts. I myself am getting a 29g to breed my convicts.

So i wish you luck, and let me know if you have any succsess

(Male Convicts get 6" long 1/2 foot----- And females get about only an inch smaller)

well yes i have a pacu living in mah 10 gallon but i don't kare if it get's big if it does get big den i'll eat it lol j/k or i'll mabe realse in the ameican river in CA or mabe give it to mah friends.. iono i just want to raise convict and have a experience cause every site i go on it i hate it!!! they don't give me nothing all they juts said they are cave breeders, and tell which one is female and male no i will not regret Nameless cause if i have alot i'll just give some of them aways or give it to familys or petsmart so i 'm not trippign about this breeding stuff... i got the convict from mah sister boyfrined and his brother haded in his 10 gallon but that time those 2 convict kill all mah sister boyfrined's lil borther fish, so the black convict layed eggs in the 10 gallon. where did they lay there eggs on??? they layed there eggs on top of a SEa shell.. then iono wat happend all my sister boyfriend's lil brothere told me was that he did not feed it for a week, so he said that all the black convict ated there babies cause they must have gotten hungry.. yeh so now he gaved me his 2 convict and he was talking about the breeding of them so i got excited i didn't know which one was female or male... so i did soem research about them so i kidna now a lil about them now... these convict that i have once already breed... mah male convict is about 3'' female is just couple centimeter smaller than the male.. yeh so those are the information there...

for one NEVER EVER release a fish into local waterways that the fish isnt native to. it can kill all of the species and severly damage the ecosystem, even with just one pacu. another thing, like others have said, most places wont take convicts, and if you think they might it is best to talk to them first, and not jsut expect them to take the fish off your hands...and my experience with petsmart is that they wont take any fish, whether it be baby convict or super rare fish....they simply wont take it.

I completely agree with you here, no one should ever release fish in waterways, there are many dangers and effects that an exotic species can have on a native ecosystem especially a fish such as a pacu.

As I said and grnlemonade said, and I will say again, giving away convicts is not easy, take it from me, I have been breeding them for way over a year now, and I have a few friends who have bred them longer than I have and trust me it is not very easy to give them away as it may seem. I am just trying to help you not be as naive as I was and fall into the same situation that I did. Anyways, that is all that I have to say, so good luck to our choice that you will make.

By policy, no chain store will take animals, except to put them up for adoption. And I will have to agree with grnlemonade, DO NOT release any fish into a natural body of water. The ecological problems that it can cause are endless.
Also, your tank is too small, you will probably lose all of your fish if you keep them this way.

truthfully, if you are looknig to make some money, you are breeding th wrong type of fish. most places wont even tak e convicts, even if you are offering them for free.

AznFryboi... ur only option is to get rid of all your fish as soon as you can, give them all to a pet store. Because clearly it sounds you are not ready to spend another $350 on setting up a 29Gallon (Or however much the $ would be). You will need a 29g. Im suprised your convicts havent killed each other yet in such a small enviroment, anything smaller then a 29g is too smalL! especailly a 2g!!!! And the pacu, get rid of him aswell, u cannot keep him, give him to a petstore as soon as possible. If you want to breed fish then buy yourself a couple guppys and put them in the 10 galloN! they will breed like crazy and its alot of fun, and you can actually do it in a 10g!

The conditions your fish are living in are horrible. Take my advice.

i agree...and like trickster said, if you want to breed fish do so with guppies. they are pretty easy to care for, breed easily, and if you breed some really nice ones it would be easier to sell them then convicts.

guppies are probably one of the easily sexed fish out there....males get tons of color and their tails are very fancy looking.......females in contrast are just kind of bland, noting special about them.

That seems like a pretty easy way to get rid of unwanted fish but, chances are it's probably ILLEGAL to release non-native fish in your area so unless you have the money to pay the fine if you get caught I wouldn't do it.

I agree with Trickster. Honestly it doesn't sound as if you're willing to spend any more money on the fish you already have in order to give them a confortable life. I would get rid of them (humanely like giving them to friends or pet stores that are willing to take proper care of them and not flushing them down the toilet or eating them as you have suggested). It seems that you main concern is only to be able to make money off of your fish, which will be very hard to do.

Whatever fish you choose in the future I suggest you actually research before buying!
