Cooking raw dog mince???

Help please I have a dilemma. I started my 9 month old bitch on a raw mince diet (as she suddenly decided she no longer liked kibble or tinned food) using prize choice or natures menu to be told by several people that this is not good for them and I should be cooking it! I have been cooking the above (although it doesn't say cook on the packet) for a month or so and adding a bit of a mixer. She does actually like it better cooked but does anyone know if this is a suitable diet or should I be adding other supplements or just keeping it raw. She has been quite hyper for the last week or 2.

 

if you think the mince is of suitable quality to be fed raw, if the packet says you can feed raw and if you dont use a microwave to defrost then you can use it raw. if this is the only food you will feed and you do cook it then you will need extra supplements.

 

Hi, I feed mine a similar raw diet, its premade and its called grandads. I get it from my vet. He did say that if your dog wont eat it raw, its okay to cook, but you do lose more nutrients.

the brand I use has several different varietys, some need added supplements.

are you feeding one that has ground bone and organ meat in it??? this is essential when feedng raw (or even if you cook it)

ie - one type is just chicken, so if I feed this I need to supplemeent with organ meat and bone, they do sell ground organ meat.

so I just use one that has a combo of ground chicken, bones and heart.

I mix some mildy steamed veggies such as peas, carrots zucchinni

no broccili or corn.

I also give fish oil and vit e and going to start a vitamin supplement, which according to raw diets if youd o it properly they dont need. by my dog is almost 8 and I think he needs it.

he has been on raw for almost a year and is doing quite well on it.

 

Hi JC, if you are using a pre-made raw food with everything added do NOT cook it - keep it raw. It has been specially formulated with appropriate supplements added and it contains ground bone. Cooking it not only destroys the beneficial nutrients formulated for raw, it changes the structure of the bone. As I am sure you have heard never to give cooked bones to dogs it becomes dangerous (even ground bone can splinter and contain sharp edges). You will always get people saying raw is not good for dogs, mostly these people haven't done their research on a species appropriate diet. If you want to cook her diet you will have to read up on it as it takes a little more time and work formulating it correctly and adding what is necessary to create a nutritionally balanced meal. If you are happy with the food and she is eating it raw I'd stick with that as opposed to cooking a diet.

Feeding raw food diet

Cheers everyone for your replies. I have decided to stick with raw food. I have one problem - I intend to take my dog on holiday abroad camping, and am obviously unable to take anything fresh. Would a processed diet be okay for that period???

 

do you have access to freeze dried food, steves freeze dried is suppose to be a good replacement for situations like yours

No there is no way for me to get that in France, but I will scan the internet to see if there are any company's like that one near where I will be staying. Thanks. Any thoughts on worming?????
