cronic ear infection question

My dog has a cronic ear infection. Can I give him penicillian that I have left over in my medicine cabinet?

 

In a word, NO. Your medication may be the wrong strength or wrong formulation for a dog. There are different forms of penicillin, it isn't all the same stuff. And we have no way of knowing what the proper dosage would be for your dog, even if the medication would be proper. Not to mention, we aren't vets, and can't practice medicine.

Also, many chronic ear infections in dogs are not bacterial, they're yeast. There could also be mites at the root of the problem, and you also need to rule out structural deformities or polyps. Last, but not least, some chronic ear infections are caused by allergies. You can't treat the problem unless you know for certain what it is.

Your dog needs to be treated by a vet. If you've been seeing a vet and aren't getting satisfactory results, get a second opinion. In the mean time, don't try treating the infection yourself. Your vet may need to do a culture and sensitivity to find the cause and correct treatment, and anything you do to the ear will cause an incorrect result, and delay the proper treatment.
