My third baby died today. It was about a week behind in development and died today. Its birth parents stopped feeding it so i put it in with my other pair and they were feeding it but it died.

Is it common if you stick a nest in a cage for the pair to hop in right away. The pair that i gave the chick to laid an egg in the bottom of their cage today so i put a nest in the cage and they hopped right in. The egg did crack on the bottom of the cage.

Hi i am sorry for your loss.

Yes its normal for a pair to jump straight into a nest box when giving to them especially if the female is already going through the egg laying process..

Some people think that eggs laid on the cage floor will be ok but they soon find out either the eggs get broken or they do not incubate properly and end up with eggs that have half formed chicks inside or they hatch and the chicks die within minutes of arriving into the world this is due the birds not being able to regulate there body heat properlyon the cage floor so inturn they cannot incubate the eggs correctly..

You may find that since you have place a nest box in the female will be more happy and feel safer ith having a place to lay her eggs.

    Mike
