I'm thinking of getting a new digital camera after the holidays. We always have such great, clear photos in the photo contests here that I wondered how many of you use digital cameras and if so what kind?

Hi Nern. I use Kodak Easyshare. Although there are a lot of great new cameras out there.

Thanks! Oddly enough, Kodak easyshare is at the top of my list after spending all night trying to learn about cameras and comparing brands! Looks like I'll probably go with that one. :D

Another Kodak EasyShare here, and we've been very happy with it for the past 2 years. It's 3.2 megapixels, and that's been more than enough for us, with one exception (see below). I would recommend not going much smaller than that, but 4 or 5 megapixels would be even better. The greater the number of pixels a photo has, the more options you have for printing it. For printing out a poster, for instance, the larger the original photo, the better. I just ran into a snag with having 3.2 megapixel photos being too small when I wanted to print out a photo as a small poster for my mom. The site I was using needed a larger source image, and my camera doesn't produce photos that big. My dad's camera is something like 5 megapixels, and that would have been big enough for the small poster without losing any picture quality.

Another limitation of my particular camera, which is something else you should consider when shopping around, is the lack of optical zoom. My particular EasyShare (the CX4300) has 2x digital zoom, but no optical zoom. Meaning that if you want to zoom in on a subject when you're taking a picture, you can't manually focus the lens in, you can only do it digitally which really makes the photo suffer in terms of quality. You can zoom in digitally later using editing software anyway, so digital zoom isn't really necessary at the photo-taking stage. So I would recommend making sure your camera can do optical zoom as well.

We paid $148 for our EasyShare brand new 2 years ago, btw. And we didn't get the docking station thing, or install any of the official software, Windows XP recognized the camera when I plugged it into the USB port with the included cable. The Windows XP camera wizard pops up every time I plug in the camera, and it makes it really easy to download the photos from the camera. You may find the Kodak camera dock convenient, but we never used it and never missed it. I'm sure that if you're in a store looking at EasyShares, a salesperson is going to try to sell you the dock. You may want to wait to see if you really need it before getting it. It costs like $80 I think.

I would also recommend having the ability to record short movies on your camera. My EasyShare CX4300 doesn't do that either, but the later models do I think.

Good luck! Digital cameras are GREAT.

I use a Sony FD-Mavica. I love not having to deal with memory cards, cables and such. Just pop a floppy disk in it and snap away. I've always been happy with the results.
