I dont particularly like it but I dont have a 'big' problem with the early ones, its pretty much done as a spay, somtimes its known that the pet is pregnant, sometimes its not known or not certain, Ive seen some vets do late ones though, dogs and cats, where the puppies and kittens are moving pretty good when they are taken out, (when done as a spay) I almost puked and did actually walk out of the surgery room (in tears) when I was told to then euthanize a litter once, I just couldnt do it, I asked if we could save them but someone else went ahead and euth'd them.
There is a shot that some vets will give, as far as I know its only good if given within 24 hours of mating, Im not that familiar with it though, the last hospital I worked at was an ER and we didnt use it so Ive only read a little about it.

Yes there is a proceedure done.

usually its with unwanted litters in a young dog, or the spay is performed and thats when they find out.

If a horse or cattle are impregnanted, you can give a shot...but it MUST be done within the first 3 weeks of insemination.....
Its arisky medicine...I've known a few animals to hemmorage, or have serious health sideeffects.

I for one will pretty much voice my oppinion on this subject as that I'm for it. But ONLY for the RIGHT resons..same as human abortions. If there are serious complications, or its a pregnancy produced through rape, ect...I can see it being done....

Not just because "hey, I don't want this kid" or so on so forth...

Same as dogs. Get them spayed if you don't want litters..simple as that.
