Does my cat need a diet?

My purebred Maine Coon kitten is almost 11 months old and weighs 14 pounds. She was spayed in June. She free feeds a quality dry food (Royal Canin Kitten 34). She only eats about 4 or 5 ounces of it a day. I give her a tablespoon of wet food at night. Maine Coon's can grow very large and her mother is large. She still has lots of energy and loves to play. But she is an indoor cat. I plan to start her on Royal Canin Maine Coon mix next week. But 14 pounds at 11 months. Should I be worried?

When Whiskey went for his visit, Dr. Vaughn said that Maine Coones average 11- 15 lbs. They're very fluffy cats and are oftentimes much smaller than they appear, tho.
When you take her for her *yearly checkup* make sure you ask your vet if she's getting too heavy...mine don't hesitate to say..."uh...Karen? He's a bit big for his breed"..
You might want to start her on an adult/indoor formula after she reaches a year and then keep an eye on it - Royal Canin certainly has enough formulas that you should be able to find something that works for both of you. Coone kitties are active creatures anyway, so that should help to keep her slim.
And remember a good rule of thumb for wet food - a serving should be no bigger than the size of a mouse! :)

to check and see if your cat is overweight feel for the ribs. you should be able to feel them reasonably well and they should feel like when u run your fingers over your knuckles.

if u have to press alot to find them, then your baby has a pooter belly and needs a diet.

but if u can still feel them with realitive ease i wouldnt worry about it- just keep an eye on it. And try not to over feed your kitty too :)

thats a good technique eternal flame. i was thinking today that both max and mikey are getting heavier. i think i better reevaluate how much i give them. maybe its just that max was soooo small for so long. he weighed 9 lbs 1 oz last friday when i took him in. Porkie piggie!!! :D

amazing since they run and play all day and max still has diarrhea and soft stools. i give them a cup and a half of food a day, between the two of them. which is 3/4 cup a piece. i dont think that sounds like too much, do you?? :0011:
