Does she have Hot Spots?

I have a Rottie girl who I noticed recently has a spot right up against her tail where it looked like someone had shaved her. It doesn't look like it was chewed at, but like someone took an electric razor and shaved it. Also recenty, she's been nipping at it a little but generally has left it alone. Could it be a hot spot? Thanks in advance!

Could be, is it above the tail (back area) under the tail (rectal area) or more on a leg? If its the rectal area, maybe at the side a little could be an anal gland problem like an abscess or impacted or something. Might be worth having the vet take a look, if its just a hot spot they should be able to give you something to take the itch away.

She has a long coat, so I felt it and found the balding spot is above her tail, and to the right. Its a pretty good sized patch.

Should I just call or take her there? She is also having a problem in her genital area...she's been licking it and now it's bloody and raw. I'm thinking just because of that she needs to go in.

I would just take her in (or call and make a definite appointment), that way you know what your dealing with and can get the correct treatment. Could be 2 different things, the one thats on the top of the tail area could be a hotspot, she might need antibiotics and something to cool/take the itch away, the one in the genital area could be anything from allergies to urine scald.

The spot on her tail really doesn't sound like a hot spot, but it definately could be something else. Hot spots are generally raw, moist, red, and oozy. If it just looks like her hair fell out, that is something else.

Yeah, I thought so. I sat down at read up on Hot spots before calling the vet and spending a wad of money, and it was nothing like what she had. Oddest thing, but it actually seems like its starting to grow back.
I love this site...it provides advice and saves money!
    Thanks for the replies guys!

    I also love this site....
For me personally though, while Ive worked a long time as a vet tech I would sincerely hope that any responses I make about any health issues are not taken as 'in place' of the expert opinion of a good vet...bottom line is this is great for getting an idea of what a specific problem 'may be' but it cant replace a visual and hands on examination....what someone describes on a message board could come across as something completely different to what it actually is....or it may just be a small part of a bigger problem.

    Just my opinion.
