Does this sound poisonous to dogs?

I have a big tree in my backyard that drops these little black, almond shaped things that the dogs like to eat. The tree is really big, like 30+ft tall and 2 ft diameter. I don't know what kind or anything. Just this morning I saw the dogs eating the little black things. Me and my imagination got to working and I started to remember how Samantha used to like to eat those things and then she died of liver failure. I have been to a bunch of websites trying to look at pictures but I haven't seen anything that even comes close to what these things look like. And being as though I have no idea what kind of tree it is....? I have to take the puppy to the vet soon (her last parvo shot!!!!!yeah!!!!!) and I was going to bring some and show the vet but I figured I would see if ya'll might know what I'm talking about. Both dogs are acting fine and everything.

I was just thinking that the little black things may be coming off a vine b/c there are vines all in that tree. I've never actually seen where they come off.

Ok...I'm going to try to stop panicking (sp?) and get back to work now!

Hmmm. I don't know trees very well. We have a pecan tree, but the nuts are green when they fall off. Nala likes to toss them around and eat them and the squirrels adore them.

Yours doesn't sound like a black walnut, either, because those are rounder and not almond shaped.

You might take the nut things and a leaf or two to a nursery and ask what they are and go from there. Let us know what you find out!

Get us a picture of the seeds and the tree, please include a good pic of a Leaf. I bet with all the resourses on the internet we can find out what it is. Plus I have a co-worker that is a professional gardener, with some botanical college background.
Lots of seeds contain piosons including arsenic.

here is a very helpful site that can take you step by step to classify a tree.
Maybe you can find your answer here.

 Thank you so much for that site! I think I figured out what kind of tree it is - a blackgum/black tupelo. I went to several sites and looked at the pictures and they look like it. They say it has a honey fruit that a lot of birds and mammals eat. I went back to the poisonous plant sites and none of them listed it as poisonous so whew!
