Hey, I'm finally starting my 60 gallon tank and I was wondering if I could have 1 convict, 1 Jack dempsys, 2 firemouths two of these really bright orange cichlids (I'm sorry I forgot what they are called) and a pleco.

the orange cichlid sounds like a red zebra cichlid... very nasty fish. african cichlid as well. the tank sounds way over stocked.

Nope, that's way too many fish.

I would either have just the JD & pleco.

Or, the pleco, con, and firemouths, plus maybe one or 2 other smallish cichlids. And you need to find out what the orange cichlid is.

Wow, maybe I shouldn't listen to what the people at the lfs say! Lol! So then how many gallons do I need to have one of each type minus the pleco?

Let's see, the JD would need at least 50 gallons, 20 for the con, and 40 for the 2 firemouths. If those orange cichlids are red zebras, you can't add them because they're african cichlids and they don't mix with new world cichlds. If they're red devils, you'd need another 50 gallons each. So that makes the total around 210. Then it would be a good idea to add another 40ish gallons for good measure (the more aggressive cichlids you have, the less likely it is that they will all get along so the more space you should provide them). So I wouldn't try that mix with anything smaller than 250 gallons.

Your 60 gallon cannot holds that many fish, cichlids grow to an enormous size (well, some) Best of luck.
