dog run dimensions for standard poodle

We are looking for information on the best size and dimensions for a dog run for a standard poodle (yet to be acquired). Does anyone have experience or knowledge about what's considered adequate and safe for a breed of that size and energy?

    Thanks!

I'm not sure any of us can answer that. Most of us keep our dogs inside and they just go outside to play.

is there a reason why you need to keep it on a run? If you walk a dog enough and give it enough excercise, it shouldn't need a run.
    Just curious?

Sure, we might be away for a several hours and not able to bring the dog along, but want him/her to have access to the outside world during our absence; therefore, the desire for an area to play in.

I think there are standard size big kennels that are maybe 4'x10'? but more important than the size is making sure there is shelter from heat/cold rain/shine. i think that usually (at least with my dogs) they fall asleep when I leave so it doesn't matter if he is inside or outside or how much space he has. Another thing to watch out for is stealing, my dog has been stolen before, so i get paranoid about that. And another thing to think about is the dog getting attacked, someone on here had there dog in an outside kennel and their dog got attacked (but the dog who did it was at fault!) just something to hink about! goood luck!

We used to have a kennel inside the garage with a doggie door to the yard so that the dogs could be inside if they chose but still go outside whenever they wanted to.

I won't leave my current dogs out in the yard when I'm not home. There's too much they could get into or hurt themselves trying to get back into the house. In a kennel rather than loose in the backyard might be more secure, as long as your dog likes it and is okay being left there. If he hates it and tries to get out, he could hurt himself.

If you're talking about just having him out for a couple hours while you are gone, probably the size isn't a huge deal. As long as he has shelter and water (a kiddie pool is really nice) and some room to walk around it should be fine.

I'd considered leaving my dog outside when we went places... until I went out one day and she was yipping her head off at a huge black snake. Not poisonous, but if she'd gotten bitten, we'd still have taken her to the vet. Now she just stays inside in her crate. :D

I leave my dogs outside when I'm not home (they're big so I don't crate train them) but I have a fenced in yard with a porch. Anyways, I just wanted to add that you should probably use 6' high fence b/c I know a St. Poodle at the dog park and that dog can jump!.

concrete vs. sandy soil dog run surface?

Thanks to all for the other posts about dog run dimensions. What are the opinions about the surface of the outside kennel area (or run area)? Concrete vs. natural? Cleaning and maintenance considerations?

    Thanks again!

I would probably go for concrete because its easily washed down, but make sure there is a soft bed, or something like a crushed granite, kind of like baseball diamond material that wouldnt make a mess.

my brother in law used to have his on top of concrete slab, but then put mulch or hay or something (i think mulch isn't healthy for a dog to lay on)

I have the same questions about the dimensions for a dog run for my GSD. She is still a pup but I want to get it so that it will be the right size at her full growth. My reason is the same as yours. It would be great to be able to leave her inside when we are not there but we are having trouble housebreaking her and cant leave her inside alone. She does come inside when we are home but when we are gone we would rather have her in a run than tied up (which I would hate). I want a run with sun protection and I also want to make surei can fit a kiddie pool so she can cool down if she gets hot.
