Why do dogs eat cat poop? What makes cat poop so appealing, and why dont they eat their own poop if they eat cat poop?

My dogs Syd and Bear are cat poop fiends. Syd isnt so bad anymore, but Bear is pretty bad. I just dont get it. I even have those boxes that you put the litter box in that has an opening at the top so dogs cant get the cat poop, but it doesnt work when you have big dogs.

How can I get them to stop?

I just found out today that my lab who has never eaten cat poop, has started eating it too! So now i have 3 dogs who eat cat poop.

Its so grosssss. Can i put something in the cats food that would make the poop unapealing?

    Thanks!

Oh cat poop is indeed a delicacy for sure. I believe it's beacuse most cat foods contain fish and fish oils that make it appealing to dogs. Here is a site with some suggestions that might help:

I've met many dogs that eat their own pooh....Molly would if I let her get away with it. Her friend Beau does all the time
I have baby gates set up where the litterboxes are. Molly will eat the stuff till she gets sick. And I use clumping litter which makes it even worse.

Probably the easiest thing to do is to move the cat box! Put it up on a table (like get a small folding table) or in a room gated off from the dogs. Then the dogs don't have access but the cats do.

I keep mine in the garage, and I always make sure that it's cleaned out before I open the garage door. They used to eat it, but now that they never find anything there, they don't check it out as often, because they aren't expecting anything.

One time someone said dogs eat cat poo, because cat food is already so high in fat, so when it sits in the litter box it is like little oreos just waiting for the dogs to eat it! Luther has eventually lost interest in it, but I used to make it so that he couldn' get to it.

Zoey likes poo of any variety. I keep gates up when I'm not there and clean the poo out immediately when I am there.

I have covered boxes facing the wall, blocked off at each side. The cats can get in and out easily but the dogs can't. Natalie loves cat poop.

ugghh, I having this problem now :x :x Jake jumped on the bed this morning for his morning pet and had cat litter dried to his nose. My new kitty does not cover his poo. I didnt have this problem before because midas always covered his. I will have to do what nern does. since I do have a cover, just face it to the wall

OK. We all love our dogs but I'm willing to bet that a cat never eats dog poop. Am I right?

When I turned my covered litterboxes to the wall Molly figured out all she had to do was knock the covers off. Then I tried duct taping the covers on and she figured out she could turn the boxes around just enough to stick her head in .... hence the baby gates

My litter boxes are actually high sided storage containers with a side cut down to let the cats in. Sometimes I can hear hacking/gagging coming from the hallway and I know there's a weenie dog trying to get in the box. The bottom of the "door" hits the dogs in the throat and gags them. And I have seen the litter on the nose of the dog that has a completely innocent look! NASTY but funny....I just have to laugh. And laugh some more when I am chasing Zoey around the yard when she gets a turd before I can scoop it.
